are kick panel pods, such as q-froms, still used for serious cars? or were they just a fad..? am i better off just putting the mids in the doors and the tweeters in the a-pillar?

If you can afford to put them in I think that they are very nice. I prefer to build my own kicks because I like the process of doing it, but if I had an extra $150 laying around I would buy a pair for my car. I think that you can get them off of ebay for pretty cheap. Check it out there. I would reccomend a 3 way system if your going to use kicks. Something like a 6 1/2 or 8" midbass in the doors and a 5 1/4 or 4" comp with tweet in the kicks. That would probably be your best bet for decent imaging. I'm not a sq expert at all, but that's how I'd do my car. Right now I just have a comp in the upper/mid level of the doors and they sound really well. There's a little bit of delay from the passenger side, but that's expected because of my location.

By themselves they are cheap plastic. But you can modify them to work well--depending on vehicle. You will need some matt deadener and a good amount of non-hardening modeling clay.
I would use them for a midrange and not a midbass. They are open back and just sit on the carpet. You need airspace for a midbass driver (just like a subwoofer). For a midrange you can seal off the back and give it a small enough enclosure to work with and still sound good.
