An amp will be night and day difference. Just letting you know from personal experience.

Head to a local shop and listen to some different speakers. Everyone has different tastes and something I might recomend might sound awful to you and vice versa.

thumpintruckred is right about going and trying to listen to speakers. Personally though listening to speakers on the wall in a shop doesn't always let you know how they will sound in your car so I don't know how far it gets people. He's also right an amp makes a huge difference. You don't have to spend a mint on one either you can get a little extra power for not a lot of money as long as you go with a decent company.

If you're looking for opinions and places to start I can give some I think highly of. Pioneer D series (I think they replaced the Rev series) are pretty nice and in budget.

Great speakers and everyone I know likes them a lot. However, personally I prefer RE for coax as they fit my taste better.

The Premier D-series sound great for the money. cost about 220 for a set retail.
Kenwood Excelon series are good for the money. and at least the coaxials are 3ohm instead of 4ohm. Safe for headunits, but a little more power.
