If you are going active why not just buy a decent comp set for the back and buy raw drivers for the front?

Some raw drivers to look into would be Seas Scan-Speak Vifa Skaaning Morel Hiquphon Peerless Dayton
Start checking out Madisound.com and Partsexpress.com For lots of driver reviews you can search on Elitecaraudio.com
Off the top of my head on your budget I would do a morel MW266 midbass, Scanspeak Revs, and hiquphon Ow1's...skip speakers in the back, those in the front will be plenty if you power them right.

American bass sells an excellent and affordable set of components as well as 4" and 5" midranges. American bass speakers are clean, loud and handle alot of power. Contact bob@americanbassusa.com, tell him eric from team neo sent you. I took a 2nd place at my first meca SQL event, with American Bass components, in the stock+ class.

my opinion.....ditch the rear speakers and spend all your money up front. get an 8" up front in your doors....I have a 7" and am not totally satisfied with the amount of bass from the front. 6.5" just don't do it and neither do 7's

800 is do able for a two way...with great results, but unless your willing to spend the extra cash for a good threeway you are wasting your 800 on a lack luster set with a lower budget... and unless you want sound for your passengers, loose the rear fill...
Scan 2904/6000 tweeter, 12M/4631G mid and 18W/4531G midbass or Dynaudio MD 160 maybe 170 if you could fit would be an unstopable combo

that is exactly what i was thinking when i read it. the ab stuff is great. they are very clean and play mids and highs insanely well. and priced very very reasonble. contact me if you need. but dont over look them.

Aren't the Explorer rear speakers at the front of the rear door about waist-or-shoulder high on the driver? Way too close to your ears for rear fill right?

For an SQ car yes....idealy you want nothing coming from the rear...not even the sub IMO.

I think a couple of us are talking about SQ on a different level than some other folks on the thread.
Sorry to sound negative, but American Bass isn't going to hold a candle to some of the other speakers out there.

If I were going to spend $800 on a front stage, I would be looking at Scan Speak Revelator, Dynaudio, Buwalda Hybrid Legatia 3" , Morel, Eton, Hiquinon tweeters, and possibly Seas (I haven't heard any Seas in a few years, so I'm not sure where they are now). There are some more
I would not be looking at any prepackaged component sets. I also wouldn't be looking at anything that has 10,000 units for sale on ebay.
My suggestion would be along the lines of a Dynaudio midbass (the 160 or 180) or a Scan Revelator 7" if you have room for the enclosure for midbass
Buwalda Hybrids Legatia 3" for midrange
Hiquinon (I can never spell that right) tweeter, possibly an LPG 25NA tweeter if you are close to out of money. The Legatia 1 tweeter is a nice tweeter also, but I'm not sure when it will be "commercially" available.

Agreed a 100%...I'd could think of allot of different set of comps way before american bass

I think a cool low effeciency DIY front end with dome tweeters would be the OW1s, Seas Excel 5.5s, and some 7" Revelators.
Want alot more effeciency and have space to give?Beyma T2030 tweeters, Audax PR170M0 midranges (or B&C 6MDN44s, and some B&C 8PS21s...that setup would be killer.

I am afraid you have not seen or even bothered to try the new AB products. Vast improvements have been made to their coaxials and component sets are new for this yr. Give them a shot, you might be surprised. I primarily compete in SPL but the first and so far only SQL show I have competed in netted a 2nd place in MECA stock+ using nothing more than a pioneer DEH-860MP head unit and 1 set of AB components without the allowable extra set of tweeters. I am sure if I had added another set of tweeters and gone full active or pro mode with this head unit first would not have been a problem. I missed first by 3 points. Please do not misunderstand, I am not claiming to be a SQ mastermind or to shove AB products down anyones throat. I am just sharing my experience. Team NEO - Eric
