im thinking of going all out and getting top of the line comps from either Focal, MB Quart, or JL Audio. My question is has anyone played around with the brand new JL Audio comps

JL comps http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3339

Focal comps http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1168

MB Quart comps http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1215

Let me know which one you guys would choose. Is the extra 100-150 dollars for the Focals worth it. My current Cyrstals are going to go in the back [Smile]

I am not familiar with the JL ZR series, however I did have the XR series. The XR series would not take much power and the tweets would constantly cut out.

I would not go back to another set of JL Comps, but thats just me from my experience.

i would run the focal out of those choices. but you need to step up to a better amp. the crystal isn't bad, but it isn't a good amp to run any high end sq components with. even your sscs's will sound a lot better with a better amp. like a helix, dls, us amps TU, etc, etc.. good speakers are only going to sound as good as the signal driving them.

I've been very happy with my MBQ Q's.You really need to biamp them though. The tweets are just so bright that the added control when biamping enables you to tune the way you like.I'd also suggest sealed kicks for 'em. Would you be doing 2-way or 3-way? In my opinion the Quart Q's sound better than the Focals (unless you're talking about the Utopia Be's).Are you going to use the provided xovers or go active? Martin

I just noticed the link you posted for the Quart Q's. DO NOT BUY THESE SPEAKERS ON-LINE!!!MB Quart does not authorize anyone to sell their products on-line so you don't get a factory warranty on 'em. The only warranty you'll get will be from the company you're buying them from. I made this mistake with a pair of QSD 213's. I bought 'em from on-line carstereo.com. I'm sure they were factory 2nds or rejects. They sounded good for a week and then the mids began to fail. I returned 'em and 2 months later I got a replacement pair. They sounded good for a month and the mids began to fail again so I sent 'em back again. About 2 months later I got my 3rd pair. They still seem to be holding up OK, but I expect them to eventually fail again. As far as high end car audio goes I won't buy from anyone unless they're a factory authorized dealer. Martin
P.S. Those speakers will run you about $1100 at an authorized dealer.

you need to go listen to all those sets before you buy. all are aquired tastes. tweeter carries all 3 of those so find one that has them all on the board.

regardless, moving your crystal set to the back is going to hurt more than it's going to help. that's if you can hear them over your 2 SEs.

if you are thinking of spending in the range of focals you should seriously consider the dynaudio 340 or 360 component sets

Does anyone know where I can hear or buy a pair of the Focal Utopia be 7's? Any one who's heard them have an opinion? I can't even find an MSRP for these.

I've been told the Utopia Be No 7's go for about $4200 with the xover and $2500 without. The only store I know of that demos these is the Tweeter in Vegas.I've heard they sound fantastic, but that the xover's not very impressive. I was considering running these myself. If I were to get 'em I'd run active xovers. I have not had a chance to hear 'em myself. Martin
P.S. If I'm not mistaken any authorized Focal dealer can order 'em fot ya.

We do not have the Be set on display but we are a focal dealer here in Baton Rouge. I can order them. As far as the three choices above, we sell JL, Focal, and I compete with Maxxsonics(who makes MBQuart now) I've heard all three sets and would recommend the Focal for pure SQ. I'd like to throw out one more suggestion as well, the Focal 165K2P. Stronger midbass than the W's IMO, damn good set of components.
