other equipment being used:
alpine cda-9831
DD 1008 (1.25 cu, ported, ~37 htz)
Jbl 1200.1 (sub amp)
amps used for the components: US Acoustics USG 2300 (until it fried), JBL PX300.4, Kicker KX 850.2

Installed in a 2002 GMC Truckette. 6.5 inch mids inthe stock location, tweets installed in door panel directly above the mid.

pros: Excellent low-volume bass. when listening to rap, it is able to play the low end notes very well, with great clarity. when listening to rap and other types of music, it has great impact from the bass drum and plays the low toms with great force.
Even though they are installed in the doors, there seems to be great "depth" to the music, which is hard to describe, but i'm sure you know what i mean.
clarity is pretty good, and i'm able to pick apart seperate guitar parts and such. the speakers have a natural sound, much better than the crystals i had before.

cons: do not be fooled by the 300wrms rating. these things are not made for high volume output. I'm currently feeding them rms power, and at moderate volumes the midbass is extremely distorting. crossover is set at 150! my crystals played at 80 and handled it well. These speakers can only put out quality bass at low volumes.
at moderate and high volumes my crystals really seemed to shine. this was where i could really hear the clarity and imaging. exact opposite with these. At high volumes (level 16 and up) the depth and vibrance out sound really drops.
also, at high volumes to tweeter loses clarity. I listen to a lot of metal and hardcore, so there is a lot of cymbals being played. at low volumes you can hear each individual crash, and can tell the difference between different cymbals. as you crank the volume up, it slowly seems to mesh into a big sizzle. at high volumes, these speakers have the sound quality of a factory speaker, but the output of about 8 of them.

note:
gains were set reasonably low, around 1/4 to 1/2 way. crossover is set at 150. EQ is set at flat. no bass boost was used.

cliffnotes: don't be fooled by the high RMS rating, these speakers only sound great at low volumes

which crystals did you have? if it was the csc's,... they're nothing compared to the new sscs! and if you were running the sscs, you'll find that it's a hard component set to beat for the $, or even double the $.

The issue that you are having is referred to as linearity. A portion of SQ competitions is your car's linearity, how well it sounds at low, moderate and high volume (enter sandford and son jingle at 80db)

yep. cause at different volumes they sound like different speakers.

this weekend i'm probably gonna put my jbl 300.4 back in, but instead of running all four channels and giving the speakers 300 watts, i'm just gonna run 2 channels, give them around 100 and see if they can handle the high volume. since the midbass is distorting before the highs, maybe the less power will equal less cone movement, and will allow me to get a little more volume out of it before they distort

i've done a bit of tweaking with the eq, gain, and crossover and have been able to get a little more volume out of them before they start distorting, but they still can't handle the high volumes like you would imagine
