I don't care how much work it takes or how long the process lasts, seal your components. I just finished making my speaker pods, installed the components and I almost **** my pants at how much better the sound is! Holy cow. Just do it, it isn't as hard as you might think, fiberglass can be very easy to work with if you just sit down and plan a little.

I would have to disagree with you here. It depends on what speaker you are using and how big the sealed volume is. I have fully sealed kickpanels housing my Illusion Nd5 mids. When they were not sealed and venting into the fender area they sounded much better than they do sealed. The sealed enclosure has a nasty resonance around 110 Hz. This makes it have more midbass and has some punch to it, for little 5" speakers. But it is very noticable on some music, by making some instruments very unbalanced sounding.

Yes, of coarse it will depend on the application, but if you have the proper space and the ability to seal them off in a good enclosure I would give it a shot. Also the process of un-sealing a set of components is not difficult. As for the peak around 110 Hz, bummer. I would still try the sealed idea and see if they sound better. This is especially true if you cannot sound deaden right away as this should cut down on the resoance of the secondary enclosure (fenderwell, kickpanal mounting wall, door) and thus improving sound. A sealed woofer should also be more protected from water and air born particles.
I guess I should have stated that if you have the time, the money and want to try and improve the sound of your components, maybe any speakers, try them sealed. Next I am going to see if I can make a ported enclosure for them, although this probably will be way harder than I want.
Just encouraging people to experiment with their sytems.

I second the post for experimentation and taking time to discover what works best. There are times when you want to hurry just to get some sounds in your ride and you want to say "to he!!" with spending 2 weeks on something when you can throw it together in half the time. Step back for a minute and realize that what you are working on will be what you listen to for the next 1, 2, .. N years - then 1 week vs. 2 weeks to get something right really isn't a big deal.

I'm all for experimentation too. The unfortunate thing in my case was the experiment was unsuccessful and somewhat irreversible. If you do seal your components and find the results similar to mine another experiment that might help is to fill with polyfill and drill some holes in the enclosure. Kind of a hybrid sealed/free-air type of thing. Never got the chance to try in my car, but had worked in the past on a pair of 6" mids.
I got some friends down in Cary, NC - just moved down there within last 6 months. Small world . I'll have to zap you when m'wife and I plan on visiting the area.

da-da-da, Down to what size should speakers be enclosed? I have a set of CDT 4's and tweets...obviously I wouldn't think the tweets should be enclosed, but what about 4's?? (they are in kicks)

The 4's I don't know about, I e-mailed CDT directly and they gave me the specs for vented or sealed. I then sealed them and was very happy. BTW CDT gives the specs in Liters not Cubic Feet so you will have to be able to perform some conversions.

da-da-da, so you sealed the 6's in around .2cuft I assume? Where did you put them? in the door? kicks? under the seat? i'm looking for a place to put my 6's (sealed) but .2cuft is a lot, and in my honda accord I'm struggling to find a place...

I have the HD-52ST series, 5.25" woofer, but the actual sealed volume that I have mine in is something like .14 I think, I will look up the design blueprints and see what it came out to be. The pods are located in the doors of my truck and I personally think they sound great. I think I am going to try to make a larger enclosure just to play with the idea of change.

Ber, let me know when you are coming down since I'm only an hour and a half west of Cary. Maybe we all can get up together and have the battle of the horns...
If you have a high Q driver put them in the door for forget about having any kind of low midbass since they won't like small sealed boxes, medium-large ported maybe but small sealed no.

I experimented with this enclosing and i found that my MBquarts get smothered in an enclosure I crossed them over at 50hz and still couldn't get punchy bass out of them,so the reasoning for the baffles was to maybe get rid of some standing waves problems that I had, so I"m going to buy some Deflex pads or Dynamat and dampen behind the driver.
