Sent in my PPI PC12 (flat piston) for repairs this past May. It's an ok sub which does the job, looks nice, and puts out some ok power. Well it's September now and guess what, no sub! So I call up Devon at Orion/ADS/PPI (nice down to earth fella) and he apologizes - says it's pretty messed up down there with the changeover. In response he offers to trade my sub with 'anything you need'! So I mention that I am looking for components. I am considering the Focal Utopia 165W, which sound incredible. Devon says that he owns a set of the a/d/s components and is very happy with the sound.
My question is - do I take this freebie (although my ears never heard them before) and sacrifice one sub, going from dual to mono sub setup?? Or should stick to my origina plan, be patient and blown lotsa $$ that I don't have on Focal Utopia 165W and wait (Devon says late November) for my sub to come back?? Also I don't know too much about a/d/s but the name has been around the forum, but not as popular as Focal, Image, Dynaudio etc. Can they be trusted as a quality SQ component set?? I am in a real bind - freebies are always nice, but I will have to sacrifice a sub that I am sorta partial to. Help anyone!

a/d/s has always been a kick-@$$ brand for SQ and they go nice and loud too!! Even if you don't get them for free, they are worth looking into.
Hrm, but that does put you in a tight position: Sub vs. Comp set. I'd personally wait for the sub, because to me going from 2 to 1 and having to stay at 1 sub is a bit of a downer. But, that's me. If you can wait for the sub, that's what I'd do, but again, that's just me. It is a bit of a pickle though.....hrm

What model would that guy be offering for components? Would it be a top of the line or just something basic? I'm not sure if a/d/s/ still makes their awesome 641PX line, but if you can get your hands on that that would be cool. You could always do that, and try to sell that 1 sub, and try to upgrade later. I believe that the a/d/s/ 300 series is also quite nice. Are you looking for 3ways or 2ways?
Just weigh your options, are subs or components more important to you at the moment. give me a call sometime.

After researching on a/d/s components, I'm convinced they are relatively good. It looks like 641PX would be the one I'd be interested in, but I am only looking for 2ways at the moment. Does anybody have info or experience on how the 641PX compares with 336c, do they have the same crossover, woofer, and tweet? If not, can and do they compare to eachother and to immediate competing brands of high end SQ components (especially Focal 165W)? Also were there older a/d/s series which I can consider, since I'll be dealing with the manufacturer, I may be able to get my hands on older speakers.
As for my decision to go mono-sub, I am still contemplating - but the offer is very tempting

good luck getting anything on the px line for that sub...not to knock your sub or anything, but it wouldn't cover 1/4 what those px components cost...they retail somewhere around $1300-1400...and not many dealers are willing to part with em for much less(not around here at least)...they were a limited run and i don't believe the px amps ever made it out...they ran out about $5000 for the amp...granted, they prolly sound great, but not great enough to merit that price tag...but hey...if you can invert mids to show off that pretty basket, it would be a sweet looking setup...the 3-series is probably your best shot...but those cost up around $500-550 i believe...the 2-series is the next line down from that comin' in at a solid $250...i got the A-series a while ago for $350...great sounding set of speakers...they're the old model 2-series...i was wholly impressed...i'll be even more impressed when i make the kickpanels with em... ...i've heard em sealed and they sound spectacular...i'm sure they probably don't sound near as good as the Focals, but they rival the Diamond Audio Hex series very easily...much better midbass and all around sound...for less $$$...hope this helps...

Darkness: I'm aware of how pricey the PXs are, but a guy can dream can't he ? I was hoping that Devon at a/d/s can knock off a chunk of the cost from the comps and then maybe I could afford them Anyone use the PX series exclusively that can compare them to Focal's Utopia comps (cough *Audiophyle* cough)? Thanks for the repsonses so far.
