I got my Eclipse 8963 6 1/2" mid/tweet combo, I am looking at running them off of two Punch 40X2's(The oval shaped ones) mono. will these take that power?

I wouldn't expect the tweeter element to take that power, no. However, you could bi-amp them (a 40x2 for the tweets and a 40x2 for the mids) and then be able to adjust the levels independantly.. I personally feel this would be better.
Your way might work, though..

I had a couple Punch 40i amps a couple years back. I tested them to do around 160watts when bridged, so I don't think they would handle the power that well. However with good crossover points and some common sense you could probably get away with it.

Problem being I cannot use the supplied x-overs unless I use a 40x2 per mid/tweet. I could find out the x-over freq for the tweet's and build my own x-over. Any one wanna help me out here?????

The best bet is to contact eclipse for recommended minimum crossover points for the tweeter and mid element...
And hey, if you're not going to use the passives, why don't you just get an external crossover? A simple 2 way crossover should be findable quite cheap... Even an Optimus model from radio shack would work.
