I have a 95 VW Jetta. It comes stock with 6 1/2's speakers in the front/rear doors. I have a set of DEI 3065's in the front doors but want more bass up front.

I'm thinking of installing a set of 8's to fix this. Should I....

A) Install the 8's in the rear doors ?

B) Move the 6 1/2's to the rear doors and install the 8's in the front doors ?

I'm also re-doing my sub setup, there will be a set of 12' IDQ's in the trunk.

What good would you do by putting the 8s in the rear doors if you wanted more bass upfront?

What 8s are you using? If it is a shallow 8, then put them in the doors and a set of 5 1/4s or horns upfront.

You could cut the floors and put the 8s in the floors. Just another option.

But that is just me.

Like Winslow asked, why put them in the rear doors for up-front bass? If you can put the 6.5s in the rear, then put the 8s up front (good set-up IMO).

It shouldn't take a lot to widen the openings from 6.5s to house 8s in those front doors. Ask Dukk for some cutting advice .

Make sure that the 8s are shallow enough to fit in your door, as Winslow stated. You don't want the glass to hit the magnet or other parts of the speaker when it's rolled down. I've used Kicker Impulse and RF Series 1s and JL W0s for bass in doors with friend's installs. They worked very well for their applications and didn't cost them a whole lot either.

Also, make sure that you deaden the doors - Dynomat (or other substance), foam (think Audiophyle or Tech-man did a door with a port and foam), and/or poly-fil. Also, talk with your local shop and the guys here about how the additional bass will effect your side windows and seals. Finally, make sure that you know where all the wires and components of the door/window controls (if applicable) are located before you cut (sliced wires not good .)

Much luck dude!!

These cars have a big bass suck out up front with door-mounted midbasses, in fact there are threads by other Jetta owners on Elite and Sound Domain on the same topic currently. So going bigger in the doors may not be the boost you're looking for.
I'd look into trying to get either the 8's or even a beefed up pair of 6.5's in a kick panel design, or possibly even integrated into the front floors although as a rule I'm not a huge fan of that kind of major surgery.

I like the floor idea but it is a little, um, permanent if you know what I mean

Have you considered a set of bass shakers? They can work well...

I think I have at least 3 inches of depth to work with. The speaker pods are mounted on top of the door frame giving plenty of room. I was looking at a set of DEI 8's and physically they would only be about 1 1/2 inches wider on each side.... I was thinking of making a mounting ring out of 1/2 inch mdf.

JD - the car is leased so I don't want to cut it. I am thinking of buying it out but still, its a 5 speed and I don't want to loose my dead pedal.

For a car with 2 sets of 6 1/2's the lack of bass has been driving me totally nuts ! I had a set of 4's in my Supra that went lower than this car does so I'm feeling a little frustrated.

Dukk - just what are bass shakers ?

Bass shakers are devices that do not emit sound, but shake the car just as if it were being pounded by a big sub. Remember the Thumpers in Dune? These act on the same principle: a small metal object is pounded up and down in the structure of the shaker at the same frequency (speed) as the subs would be hitting (so you get a thump every 20 Hz - at the same time the subs hit 20Hz). They typically are the size of a 6.5" speaker. Some have their own amp and others need an amp, generally rated from 25 - 50 RMS (may be +/- on newer models). When last I looked into them, the dealer wasn't sure of the long term effect of them on the car (might be worth looking into). Not that expensive & can fit under your seat.
