Has anyone heard these? I'm wondering because I would think an 8" driver used as a midrange speaker would be sloppy. Would these have more impact and sound as good as (or better than) the 165w3 (3-ways)?
I've been debating for too long. It's between Dynaudio System 340 (3ways with 7" midbass), 360 (same with 8" midbass), 260 (2ways with 8" midrange), 240 (same 7"), Focal Utopia 165w3 (3ways with 6.5" midbass), 165w (2ways with 6.5" midrange), and 180w (same 8").
I want a very good stage with detailed sound and excellent midbass.
I have no way of hearing any of these speakers before purchasing, btw, so don't tell me to listen for myself. =P

They are not "sloppy" at all! Many successful and highly regarded home loudspeaker system are 8" 2-way designs. There is nothing inherently inferior about an 8" driver in the midband. because of the dispersion pattern becoming narrower at higher frequencies, it is important to use a tweeter that is useful at somewhat lower frequencies than with a smaller diameter woofer.........
" Would these have more impact and sound as good as (or better than) the 165w3 (3-ways)?"
Yes, somewhat, simply because of the larger cone area offering superior low frequency extension and output capability........

Supremely fine speaker systems all..........

And all will provide this, with the larger systems providing superior extension, output and dynakmic capabilities..........

That makes things infinitely more difficult!

Focal and "sloppy" are antonyms. I've used 15" caps for mid-range in stage-audio (18s are typically reserved for sub usage) and they were loud, crisp, and clear (JBL pro-line). 8" mid drivers (be it mid-bass or mid-range) will sound most excellent!! If you got the space for them, use them. 6.5s make the sound warm (which is good, IMO), but 8s will make it even cozzier (again, good IMO).

I have Focal Audiom 7K2 as pure midranges (2500Hz-200Hz) in the kicks. Those 7" mids are Focal's best midranges for home speakers. By the way, all Focal Audiom (top of the line)midranges are 7".
