Hi, i was wondering if you all can tell me the pros and cons of 2 way components vs. 3 way components vs. coaxials. Which ones will work the best for SQ? thanks

3-way PROS Overall usually the best due to the division of the frequency response......each component of the system has a smaller part of the sound to play vs. the 2-way or the coax.
CONS Depending on the 3-way system, you may have to buy a pretty expensive high amp to deal with the extra power needed.....if not then you're golden.
I can't give you much help on the coax vs. the 2-way, other than you can mount the tweeter anywhere you want with 2-ways. As for sq i wouldn't want to take a guess because my friend has eclipse highs 2-way up front and eclipse coaxes in back........and let me tell you something those 6.5's in the back have a x-over and sound just as good as the components. If i was forced to make a guess between the two...i'd have to say the 2-ways. Just my ear's opinion you'll have to try you're own ears on deciding........everyone likes different things. Hope i've helped some.

overall, even the cheapest component sets should sound better than coaxials. the treble/midrange should remain more uncolored since the speakers are separate

I've heard AWESOME examples of each, and I've also heard TERRIBLE examples of each. I like coaxials because it's more of a point source driver. However, some do have problems with reflection due to the tweeter mounting.

Everyone's made excellent points so far. The biggest advantage to co-axials that I've found is:
1) they're cheaper (typically) 2) they're made to replace most factory openings (less work for you)
Cons: 1) Limitations in tweeter placement 2) X-over is typically limited (vs. a component X-over).
For ease of installation and relative sound improvement vs. factory, I'd go with an medium to high priced co-axial anytime. Most medium to high-end comps will sound better, but not always. As goes the saying: Trust yer ears!!

Personally I would have to agree with Audiophyle on this one. The only coaxes i've heard that are really better than lower end comps are the eclipse pointsource 6 1/2. These have basically a component x-over even with adjustable tweeter level. I would go with a midrange component system up front w/ coaxes in the rear. That way your front sound stage will be better and more colorful like jimbo said. Plus coaxes don't have the imaging problem in the rear because they will be playing off the back glass. Overall just more realistic sound this way. My opinion only....just depends on how much tweeter you want to hear and your musical taste.
