The Lotus is a 4 ohm version of the Excel and a tad more suited for the car environment. The Excels have some of the best midrange in the business, and decent midbass if you have .5-1.0 cubic foot ported for each 7...the Lotus seem to work best IB just by looking at the specs.
So if you don't have a buttload of power and space for the Excels, then the Lotus would probably work better- the Excels are pretty ineffecient 8 ohm drivers, and the Lotus are moderatly effecient 4 ohm drivers.
A good tweeter? The Seas "Millenium" tweeter is one of the best that I've heard.

Thanks for the reply Winslow. BTW I was breezing through a post and I saw you asked me if I was going to a show. I dont know how I missed your response, but I did. Anyway I didnt want to seem like I was ignoring you, but to answer your question I am a college student with no time, or extra money so I wont be able to make any shows anytime soon. I hope NOPI turned out well, wish I could have been there.
These speakers will be placed in a kick panel in a 94 Accord. I dont know if I could give them their required ^3FT in a kick panel. What do you think? I was first interested in the ScanSpeak mid/woofer, but after some looking I think I have decided to go with the SEAS. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. BTW I have a Soundstream Reference 500 and 604 to work with on my mids, highs, and dedicated midbass. That should be enough I would think. What do you think?

Well, I really think that it would be tough to get that amount of space in the kickpanel of that car. If you wanted to do the Lotus or Excel 8s down there, you could do an AP or IB install with them.
If you get a chance, come up to the IASCA Finals in Charlotte next month b/c there will be a car there that has the Excel 8 IB in the kicks of a Contour...sounds awesome. Plus you could check out some ID horns and midbasses while you are at it.
I hear NOPI was pretty good so far.

I wish I had the time and money to go. I might just do it, I havnt been to a show in a while so i guess I deserve to have some fun, not to mention I need to demo some things, so it will really be a buisness trip
I dont want to use 8's I will be using the 7". Still I think I would be hard pressed to come up with that kind of space, but what can I do, I'll just get them and do the best I can. Do you think the Reference set on madisound is worth the money they want, or should I buy seperate components? I have never built a passive crossover network before, but im sure I could figure it out without too much trouble(im going to school for electrical engineering, maybe my knowlege can finally get put to use ) What would you do? I prefer the smooth sound as opposed to the "harsh" sibilant charachteristic of metal domes. I do however need a tweeter that can hang with the mids when the volume goes up. The only tweeter available in the Lotus is a metal dome, and I dont think the crossover will work if I get the milleniums, and if it would be possible I would like to cut down on the cost(seems like theyre charging extra for convenience) so what do you think? Are there any other tweeters I should know about, or do you think the milleniums would be the best option? What would be a "ball-park" price range for GOOD parts to build a passive crossover?

You should try to make it to Finals- there will be some very very awesome cars there, including mine . Seriously, if you have wanted to hear what something sounded like, then chances are you will find it there.
Well, I wouldn't buy jack from Madisound. If you want the Reference set then go over to www.zalytron.com and buy it from Elliot. I bought my Excels from them- great service and better prices.
Well...the 7s are just the 6.5s with a larger mounting flange. I have the W18EXs and they have a 6.5" cone.
If you wanted to, you could buy the speakers elsewhere and have Madisound use their LEAP program to design the crossover and have them build it. Prices...wow, passive crossovers with "audiophile" grade components will get very expensive very fast- to the point of costing as much as the speakers. But you don't have to use Hovland caps and Goertz silver foil coils...
Well, the Milleniums sound great, the Scan Speak 9500, 9700, 9900, and 6000s sound great, the Focal TLRs work really well with the Excels, Morel makes a few awesome tweeters too...and I bet the Bohlinder Graebenher Neo 3s would work well too, but would be a pain to get to image correctly.

Yeah I think its time I made an apearance at a show. I would really like to see and listen to your car. You have a few things I want, and would love to take a listen.
Hmmmm I didnt know Zalytron sold the Lotus line. I looked but didnt see them. I see that SEAS has put out another Lotus component set called the Performance line. If you get a chance check out the specs and let me know what you think. At this point I may just go with the Excel line. Its a proven winner, and its cheaper. I just cant find enough information on the Lotus to make feel comfortable laying out $830 on a component set that if was that good should have some followers. I mean look at Focal, they are good but you have to admit there is better, and everyone knows about Focal. From what I can find the Excel line is GREAT. That Millenium tweeter you segested along with a great Excel mid/woofer will probably be what I go with unless I can find more info on the Lotus, and I can find it cheaper than what Madison sells it for. Got any suggestions for an Excel 6"-7" mid/woofer? Posts: 113 | From: GA | Registered: Sep 2002

Go back to Zalytron...go to the News part...click it. You should see about the second from the top...Now in stock Seas Lotus Reference kit $599.95
Don't know how current the prices are (they don't/haven't changed much over the year)...but that is a $230 savings over Madisound if the prices are still good.
My car will be easy to spot- 93 4 door Accord, gray/purplish, 18" Konig Tantrums, NC tags, and large Image Dynamics stickers across the bottoms of the doors. If you come up, you have to take a listen and introduce yourself.

Sounds like we have a few things in common. I have a gold 94 4DR Accord with 17" ALT190's (same thing as Tantrums)and if all goes well I will be running two IDMAX's and the SEAS front stage.
Can you tell me any information on the show-when-where-cost of admission, or even if you can tell me where to get the info Ill probably jet up there and check it out.
I was surfing the web last night and came across that page your talking about. Talk about Madisound being WAY overpriced huh.
Have you had a chance to look at the new Lotus set? Looks like the woofer is made out of a different material than the previous one. I wish I knew how to read the specs so I could see if it is a better, or worse woofer. Another thing Im worried about is the tweeter that comes with that set. I dont think I want to go with a metal dome tweeter.
Can you think of anything better to go with that is a set? I like the SEAS, but I dont want to overlook anything else that I should know about. Lots of ppl seem to like the DD, but I saw a reveiw on SD that compared a S-S Rainbow and DD, and from what I understod the DD didnt compare well to the others. BTW what do you think about that NorthCreek silk tweeter? Its only $36 for the pair, not bad even if its not worth a $ht(which Im sure is not the case) you cant go wrong for $36.

interesting to see that seas used a parallel LC notch filter for the midrange. This thing has a massive peak around 4 to 5k just like the regular 17we002 which i have for home use.
Question is this a better approach than using a 24db/oct..same number of parts too....interresting approach
its good to see what seas uses as a crossover :-)
