I have a $320 budget for my front stage, and at Sound Domain, these are the three brands I have my eye on for my price range. Just wondering what component set you think I would like most based on what I listen to.

1. Dave Matthews Band - live particularly
2. Punk rock and ska - from rancid to ramones
3. Rap - anything from bone thugs to 2pac
4. Metal - tool mostly
5. Rock - coldplay, radiohead, old stuff mostly

I would really like accuarte live music portrayal since many of my CDs are live ones.

Thanks.

I'm also going to add the A/D/S 235is component series to the other 3. Would these be the best bet for what I listen to?

I like what I see, but I don't think I have the experience to build a custom crossover for the Vifa drivers and tweets.

Is there any way I can buy a crossover for them, or get a pro to build it for a cheap price?

Madisound and Meniscus Audio will make an optimized x-over bluepring using LEAP for around $40. Then all you have to do is buy the correctly valued components and solder them together, which is not that hard. So don't let that scare you away. You will get sound that is just as good if not better by buying home speakers, AND you will save a lot of money in the process. Car Audio is WAY overpriced for what it is.

This is kind of scaring me away [Wink] So, I'm at Meniscus Audio's website...will this work?

Tweeter - D27SG-05-06 1" Dome Silk 6/4.6 91 2-30k 1000 100
Midrange - P13 WH-00-08 5" Mineral Filled 8/5.7 88 60-5k 60 40

Will that midrange work for a 1997 Ford Explorer (5 1/4 componenet size, 5x7 coaxial) in the doors?

Now what Capacitors, Resistors, Cored Inductors, Air-Cored Inductors would I need for that setup? Do I just get one of each and then get the $40 crossover thing and is there somewhere online that will tell me how to solder it together?

First you buy the x-over design service from Meniscus. They will set up the x-over for the drivers you select, i.e. it will be custom designed for the speakers you select. Then, they will send you the blueprint with the topology of the x-over. Then you go out and buy the values of the resistor's, inductors, and capacitors that are stated on the blueprint. In general, air cored inductors are better than cored ones, the cored ones are just a cheaper way to make an inductor, though it is also an inferior one. I am sure that meniscus could aid you in the selection of what type and quality you should buy.

well you gotta remember that those drivers aren't meant for a car so unless your going to put them in a kick i would only suggest vifa's actual caraudio line
so for the 5" it would be the Vifa P13WH-10-04 - $37.65 each

these are designed for actual door/free-air use

and on the x-over issue..that completely depends on how you run your speakers..say for example you ran the woofers on the front channels and the tweets on the rear channels of a 4 channel amp...you could just set the highpass x-over of the amp up to the 2-3khz that the tweeters need,

i currently have the 7" model of vifa's caraudio line in my doors...soon to be the 8" off the site i would definitely recommend these..after you sound deaden your door alittle these things are awesome with the midbass

There is nothing wrong with using home audio stuff in a car as long as you take that into account when designing your system. They dont have to say car audio in the manufacturers description to count as such.

yes but how many home audio drivers you know that will work well free-air in doors? not to many now

unless he plans on using kicks then he needs to check specs first

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of tweets and mids. Midbass' are a bit more selective, however I was blindly assuming he was going to use kick panels.

Scan Speak makes a set of tweets that come with a built in grill for car audio use. They have them on partsexpress and madisound and they are the 9204/6000-00's. Take a look . . .
