I am starting to get sick of my stock speakers in my Sonoma so I have decided to take the plunge into new speakers now... I listen mostly to prog-rock, alternative, guitar orientated jazz.
One thing I have realised I really like the sound of is the snare drum... now is that part of the mids or high bass (oxymoron?).
I am not sure whether I am gonna get component or seperates and I am not really sure of the price range to look for... I am a student on a tight budget but am a stickler for quality... I am patient so if I have to save for awhile to get something good I will do that.
The deck is a Clarion DX6657z and the speakers will be powered by a Kenwood KAC646x with each speaker only receiving 25W RMS and all signals above 150Hz.
Does coaxial mean that you don't have to power the woofer and tweeter seperately?
My budget is probably around $150-$200cdn.
thanks!

There isn't toooo much in the way of comps for that that much $$ CDN. Usually the cheapest comps in a brand line up are around there. Still, I would take a cheap comp over most good coaxials. I would recommend either a decent coaxial with a swivel tweet (Rockford and Pioneer make them, among others) or a cheaper comp set like Rockford FNPs.
You can run any speaker combo like this off your deck, but if you do not intend to ever get an amp for them, stick to the coaxials.

The snare drum sound has components in the VERY extreme high midrange/ middle treble range due to the snare itself. Most well designed component sets should reproduce it just fine. I'd say you might be selling yourself short on your budget, my friend, as that much won't buy you too much in the way of a "name" and likewise possibly not enough in the way of performance... But thats just my thoughts, I could be horribly wrong.

I think many would agree that Polk Audio is infamous for making quality drivers for a lesser cost. If you get a chance, look into Polk, but some other brands that are mentioned often enough to warrent a listen are Infinity and JL Audio. These three companies make some very nice 6.5 coaxials. However, if you want to stay with the coaxial idea, and are actually willing to save money, the CDT Braxial line up maybe your ticket, although I don't know if 25 watts will do them justice.

CV Stealth and their big brother Vega series coaxials are nice. Blaupunkt 6.5s aren't bad for the $ and take 40 RMS. Kicker Impulse, haven't priced for a while, but I liked their 3.5s and 5x7s. Infinity is always good. JBL is a solid brand, but try to keep to their higher-end equipment.
As stated above, JL, Polk, Oz, Orion (not coaxial), RF, etc. As SS hinted (stated), put them side-by-side, if possible, and let your ears be the judge. If X sounds better than Y, take X even if it will cost a bit more. You'll end up kicking yourself later if you take Y, while wanting X.

I go down to Digital Dynamics in Abby. They are a great bunch of guys and the pricing is competitive. There's this mega smart guy, Paul, who only works saturdays. He is like a stereo god. It seems that there is nothing he doesn't know! He's a wicked installer too!

Man, I wish I had more money to do this... should I spend a bit more to get speakers that can handle more power for upgrade purposes? I know my Kenwood isn't going to be in there forever so....
Dukk, do you know of any places in the Burnaby,Vancouver, Coquitlam region? Abbotsford is a lil drive for me
