I was wondering what would be the best way to check for a blown VC? besides the smell... I was told to use a multi-meter and check for the correct resistance... is that right?

yeah, if it has 4 ohm vc's, th resistance should be around 3.5. If it's 0, your vc has a short, DO NOT USE IT. If it's infinite, how have a blown vc, or new paperweight.
