Bare with me you guys, Im still reletivly new to car audio (although I love it already!), but umm, I installed a brand new 12"W3 to my 500/1 and set the gains correctly (I think). Well when I played my bass test the car reaked of this funny smell. Does this normaly happen with new subs or am I about to distroy my brand new sub? Thanks a ton for you patience with the "newbie" Posts: 34 | Registered: Nov 2001

Subs at first smell a bit as they break in, you more than likely have nothing to worry about. If the smell persists, well you will know if it stays around long, the sub will die. However, Id say your fine, maybe turn the gain down for a while to see if that aids the problem if your nervous, doesnt hurt to have it to low for a while. With out smelling it I cant swear its break in odor, but for the 3rd or 4th..id say your fine lol. Enjoy your new toy!

Could the smell be coming from a new enclosure? I've only had MDF enclosures, and I LOVE the smell of fresh cut MDF wood whenever I pump sound through a brand new box.

when my 1 earthquake blew, it didn't have the typical burnt coil smell, quite a weird one actually, but it still stunk, and it wasn't even completely fried. soon its gonna go to a wall outlet i think, just for fun. Anyway, some people say new woofers burn excess glue at first causing them to smell, that is probably all you are smelling.

I just installed 6 MTX 8000 series 12"s and 3 MTX 8100D 1500 watt amps, and ya they smelled for the first month if I turned it up. You should play a system at normal listening levels for around 30 hours (recommended) before you crank it up. I say screw that.

The smell you are speaking of is the sign of a voice coil that was not baked for the proper amount of time. Because of this, the glue is not cured and will further bake as the woofer is played due to the heat generated. This often will go away after a month or two of playing the woofer. If this persists, it is likely that you are pushing the woofer beyond its likes and will ultimately result in failure.
