i have one of these units, very nice and easy to use. you'll need to get the optional high spl mic if you plan on reading db levels in excess of 130.
but, if i had to buy one i would get the new audio toolbox. it costs around $1200 new. you get an rta, 175db spl mic, oscilliscope, tone generator, and multimeter all in one plus some other cool stuff. very accurate too.

the reason I am looking into getting one is this:
If I need to tune its either at a show or usually late at night when I get everything in the car.
I have not looked into going to a shop, but I am thinking they would probably charge $50 an hour, if not more.
So over a year if you visit a shop a couple times at 2 hours a time, an RTA could very easily pay for itself, assuming I can locate one for around 800 or less.

btw the audio tool box even comes with a rechargable battery pack. i like this unit! it is the new official mic for USAC competition in 2002.
how much would you give me for my rta-33? its about 2 years old, comes with case, 12v power adaptor, rta mic and high spl mic. this mic is guarunteed to read over 170db acuratly. email if interested.
