The Alpine CTA1505 has 4v preouts, sub volume, 7band eq. Whereas the CVA1000 has 2v preouts, but has that nice motorised screen. Is there a noticible difference between 2v and 4v preouts?

I don't think that there is a big difference between the 2V or 4V preout. The only difference is in that you can lower car-distortion noises with the higher output, but you are not in the need of 4V preout because the modern amplifiers are capeable to do their full output within 0.5V to 9V or even more. So I think you should go with the CVA-1000 because it's an "open" system, you can add DVD-player, CD-changer, navigation, xovers, TV-tuner, DSP-devices and things like that. So it is the better system to build on.

I have had the cva-1000 and now have the newer version cva-1005 and love it. If I had to pick between the 1000, and 1005 I would take the 1005, but have you heard of the iva-800, its the same as the 1005 but it adds a in dash cd and 4volt pre outs.
