It says on their site that the Nakamichi CD45z has a signal to noise ratio of better than 85. Does that mean its around 86, 87, 88 or is it really up around the 95's.

That means it's greater than 85dB, which should be fine for most folks. What they dont tell you is whether that s/n is the output of the built in amplifier, or if that measurement was taken from the preamp level outputs. Either way, I wouldn't worry to much about it.
