A friend of mine is starting to get into car audio (with a LOT of coersing from me) and he wants a new HU, but said that he doesnt know if he can take out the factory HU cause of internal computer functions. Does anyone have any more info or have you done/seen any installs in 2000 Impalas?
Thx, JT

There is no accessory wire in the dash of the Malibu's and Cavaliers. In the event that you are going to replace the radio, be sure to pay attenation to this little bit of information, the factory accessory warning buzzer is an integral part of the radio. If the radio is removed the buzzer function is removed as well, in the Malibu there is the possibility that you will also lose the oil or check engine indicator. There are no ways(adapters)around this as of yet, so keep in mind that there is a bigger trade off nowadays for swapping head units in 2001 vehicles. If these are not a big enough deterrents to trading out the old for new, then remember to take proper precautions against accidental airbag deployment. Follow this order explicitly: 1.) Find a suitable accessory lead before proceeding with the installation, preferably at the ignition harness. 2.) Turn the ignition off and keep it off until the installation is complete. 3.) Remove the fuses that provide power to the airbag system, consult your owners manual for the exact number and location. Removal of the fuses is important to prevent accidental deployment of the airbag. 4.) Disassemble the dash and proceed with the installation. Remember to install a fuse in the wire that you're attaching to the ignition harness for your accessory power. 5.) After the installation is complete reassemble dash. Pay particular attention to the newly installed accessory wire, make sure that it is routed safely, and avoid pinching the wire behind the radio. 6.) Reinstall the fuses for the airbag system. 7.) Turn on the ignition and test the radio functions.
The above steps will insure that the installation does not end with a trip to the hospital to treat a broken nose or concussion delivered by an airbag.
Hope this answers any questions, I'll post later, this was posted by Mabeita, a while back, but I'm being hurried off so I'll get on later

a few of those impalas have quite a few primary computer functions in the radio, and to replace it, you need to keep it hooked up, but re-located somewhere in the vehicle. We've yet to do one, but it doesn't sound like fun.

There are alot of functions through the factory radio, including: a. oil life monitor b. alarm functions c. tire pressure monitors d. door and headlight warning buzzers
there are more, including airbag functions. The only option you have is relocation, not removal. Scosche makes a harness for this application.

Not always true. I have an '04 Impala and relocation was not necessary. The models which have the Onstar system or other advanced features require the relocation. My oil life meter is not tied to the radio.
Regarding the accessory wire and alarm functions/buzzers ... there is an aftermarket harness you can get which will give you all this functionality. It is more expensive, but requires no extra wiring.
