I am currently in search of a new head unit. And i never realized how hard it really is. I am currently loking into the new Alpine, Pioneer, and possibily Sony. the more specific models are the CDA7865, the DEHP8200R, and an equivalant sony(dont know model number) I know that the Alpine will be much more expensive, but I already have one(7839) and like it alot. Especially styling. I thinkt aht the pioneer has more features, but i guess there is just somethign about alpine that attracts me. please give me any suggestions you have. Also i am looking for one with a hp/lp crossover as a feature, since i really dont want to add an amp to my highs. another reason i want a new HU the one i have now doesnt offer this.

if it woul dbe worht it to go for the ALpine i might.

thanks alot

If I can recall, the kenwood excelon units had a built in highpass for the internal amp....I think the pioneers do to. I've yet to see an alpine that does, I'm not familiar with the new models though.

all i can say is DON'T GET A SONY. I've had two and they are CRAP. My budget Alpine player was better. My Sony won't accept CD's sometimes and just spits them out. Sometimes it don't recognize CD text disks until you shove it in a few times. ....and this was an ES unit.

and an add on.... My Sony's tuner is crap.

as far as previous experience is concerned, you'll always find someone that will swear up and down that some brand is really good and some brand that isn't. Pretty much the first thing I look for in a head unit is what features it has that I need(good preout section, remote, and now more recently, D/A converter, and preout impedence) some CD sections of cd players are differnent than others...but I really haven't researched the matter too far. If you don't plan on adding an external amp for your highs, all you really need to look at is how good it looks to you, and how easy it is to use for you. other than that, you're not gonna be able to tell the difference.

I've been pretty happy with most pioneers
i've played with, and the ones i own. nice
units, easy to use and if some cases more
features than you'll ever need. I agree with
ironsides, DO NOT get a sony, they are like
the costco brand of cdplayers except they
cost an arm and a leg. hehe other you can
look into, RF, Clarion, Eclipse.

Happy Hunting

Well, you ought to play with a bunch and see what wows ya. As for sony being junk? Mine is going on 1 year use (cdx-c6850) and it works flawlessly. I also have a very old 10 disc changer that works like a champ. I think you will get bad experiences with every brand you ask about. My thoughts.

I would say the Alpine is the better quality unit out of those you listed. In my experience, the Pioneer and Sony are not built as well. I have also found Clarion to be nice.

I have to say Eclipse all the way!! If for nothing else, thier security afforded with the key cd. I'm not sure if they have models with a hp/lp option for powered outputs though. Check out http://www.eclipse-web.com/nf_top.html under products.

Of your choices though, I'd get Alpine the new styles look cool.

Pioneer is the Sh*t! I've never had problems with any of their cd players that I had. The have lots of features, and have lots of colors & graphics & stuff. Thats what attract me, I don't know about you guys, but Any cd player that has screen savers w/ dolphins swimming across the screen or a city turning is cool in my book.
