Okay here is the thing. I have a kenwood excelon ps-709. I've had it for about 2 years. And recently it skips on anything, ona little bump on the road and I can't even turn my radio up loud because it will start skipping like crazy. I was told that the laser needs to be realigned. I've got a background in electronics so I could probably fix it myself. Can anyone actually tell me what it is that I have to do to realign the laser. Thanks.

i had the same problem a few years back with a kenwood 8003. i just thought it was due to excessive jolting as i had no coil springs in my car at that point...........

A skipping cd player can be because of numerous problems withing the player. Yes, a mis-aligned laser can cause skipping.
Another thing to look for is the cd drive motor. Over time the motor can weaken. While normal operation is unaffected, when you run over a bump and the cd is jolted, the drive motor cannot keep the cd spinning withing the specified rpm parameters. When the cd slows below a certain point, a "skip" is the result.
You might try re-mounting the cd player so that it is more secure. Does the mounting provide for a backstrap? You may need one. I thought Excelon decks were warrated for 3 or 4 years. If it is just send it in for free.

First thing I want to say is Don't use a CD lense cleaning kit from store. Canned air is ok. The techs at our store tell me that be using those CD cleaning kits that you get at the store actually can ruin your lense. The liquid kits actually have tiny abrasives in them that scratch the lense. And the CD lense cleaing kit, the CD has all those little bristles on it that scatch also. While I don't know that this is the concrete truth, it makes very good sense. I would suggest using the canned air first and also trying to mount it more secure like sqandspl said. If that doesn't fix the problem then take it to a store to be cleaned. Don't attempt to align it yourself - not for the inexperienced. Let us know how it turns out.
