My Kenwood KDC-X889 shuts off(no power) when I turn my system up to a good volume. I have a substantial voltage drop @10v sometimes. I tried going straight to the battery and same thing. Also, any other radio works fine. Is this unit defective or just that sensitive to voltage as compared to other radios?

try hooking it up to a battery that is not connected to the vehicle. basically, set a battery on the passenger seat, keep everything else connected to the deck...but power on the spare battery. if it works fine then, it's just sensitive to the voltage drop. If it still does it, you have to look elsewhere.
Is the deck running speakers, or just some preouts?

Why is it that I only have problems with this Kenwood? My Pioneers and even my Dual flip out tv
works fine.

check the voltage at the radio and check your mounting of the radio.

Does it shut off then turn back on right away?

Yes, it comes back on, but then of course my amps are not pulling any cuurent as they are not playing. As far as mounting, it shuts off even if I'm holding it in my hands.
I've sent it back to Kenwood to see if they can find anything, but probably won't since it will work fine sitting on a test bench.

i would figure too that u are getting a massive voltage drop at the head unit also put a meter on the head unit and see how much it drops when it shuts off

We had the same problem that the voltage drop would shut off our head unit. We ended up putting a cap in on the power for the head unit to help us with it.

Your pioneer and dual flip out may stay on at 10 volts or under, but I promise you their output turns to garbage and can fry an amp quickly.

I have run kenwoods for years, around 10 volts they get picky. Try wiring in an alarm back up battery behind your radio. cmall, compact, and enough to keep the radio on....even during voltage drops down to 7 volts at the battery.

If you use the alarm back up battery though, you must use diodes in line of the power wire so your system doesn't try to drain that too. I think I had something like 10 six amp diodes all wired together. It took that many to keep the diodes from overheating.

Feel free to call me at the shop Walt and I will be glad to walk you through it.

Thanks Carlton. Got it back from Kenwood and they said it was designed to shut off at/or below 10v.
I'll call you about that when I get ready to test in the Honda.
