Best bet (in my book) on a lower priced HU is the Nakamichi CD45Z. Damn that thing sounds awesome! I'm running 4 Nak coaxes off mine, and it's not to far from going to local comps!!

I've always thought that Eclipse and Alpine were two of the top mid-high price/end HUs. Under 650, that gives you a very wide spectrum to test. Kenwood eXelon isn't bad, and can get for less than 600.
Naks, like Audiophyle said are top-knotch equipment. They'll never let you down. I'm not sure if you can find a McIntosh for less than 1 - 1.2K, but if you can, I'd snag it up in a second!! I'm pretty sure that they do make sub-$1K HUs, just been a while since I've been graced by the presence of a true high-end shop .

If you can get a C-90 for that price I would jump on it. That is below what most dealers can uy that piece for. I have that deck and never have regreated what I payed for it. Good luck on your search.

Well, I used to run the cdx-c900 and cdx-c910, the predecessors to the c90. I now use the Clarion drx9575rz, and consider it a much better all around head unit. With the current price drop on that unit, MAP turns out to be US$600. I would recommend you at least consider this unit, and try to find one to play with.
Also, what are your priorities for the headunit? If you are looking for a pure SQ deck, find one of the few remaining clarion 9255's that are still in the sales stream.

I can get that Sony C-90 for around 650$ us over here in Belgium because they are having sales on that unit. Maybe Sony is changing them or discontinuening (???) them so that's why it is so cheap.
Sweetsounds --> I want a good unit but not only for SQ, it has to be used for SPL also.
