I wasn't talking about using the iPod as a music source, I'm talking about using it as THE headunit and use a line driver to boost the headphone output to drive amplifiers. The volume will be controlled by the line driver, the volume on the iPod would be set to a level where it won't distort. The video output of the iPod would be hooked up to video screens with a video distributor in the car to watch movies and what not. Does it sound like a winner?
I don't use any signal processing/EQ/image enhancer/DSP, I perfer flat signal because speaker placement makes all the difference.

No offence, but why? There's no FM modulator, no aux in, does not run on a dedicated 12V source, and has no provisions to run outside media other than what is put into it which is a compressed format to begin with(AAC format/MP3). A setup like this would only be allowed at a single point and at the Judges discression.
It would be like hooking up a Discman to your amps with a line driver - possible yes but why?

Because I'm sick of carrying a disc and I absolutely hate any type of skipping. I haven't listened to FM for about 5 years now(seriously), I've never had to hook up an aux. source ever since I got into the car audio scene, and you can buy a car charger for the iPod which I can hardwire into my 12v system. I'm not competing or anything so I won't have to worry about disqualification until one day I actually have a car that's SPL-friendly like my old VW Golf. Also, I can take my iPod with so I can use it when I'm not driving(compared to insanely expensive navi headunit that can't go anywhere but in your car), I'm planning to buy a portable GPS unit too so I can take that around instead of being stuck in the car.
Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't iPod hold uncompressed .wav files? I've been listening to mp3s in my car for the past two years and to be honest a 256kbps mp3 sounds just as good as a wav file TO ME, I can hear a slight difference(wav files sounds "fuller" and more airy) in my home stereo but I would sacrifice a bit of quality over mobility. Let me know what you think.

Why don't you buy a head unit where you can hook up an Ipod databus cable? You can throw your ipod into your glove compartment and control it from your headunit.
Has it been done... back in 91 I use to roll with a discman as my h/u. Worked great but lost it's novelty in short time.
Now a days I suggest getting a h/u that has the ipod connection or at least can play MP3 or AAC files (pioneer h/u) for the sake of easier control and saftey. (easier volume control)

i dont use an ipod.. but i use a similar item.. creative sen micro 6gb.
it IS my headunit for the truck, and for my daily driver festiva.
it has an fm tuner, a 5 band eq, and it holds 6 gb of songs.
i, like you, cant tell the differance (in the car) between a compressed mp3 versus an uncompressed wav.
you dont need the line driver either.
my zen is plugged straight into my amps.
the volume control on the zen is the volume control period, just as if it were an indash headunit.
i have it plugged into a cigarette lighter adapter, which is hardwired into vehicle. and i have it held in place with a cell phone holder.
i couldnt be happier.
i hate bothering with cd's i hate songs skipping when you go over bumps or tracks. this has radio and mp3, what else do i need!
so.. to answer your question...
YES it can be done. if its what you want to do.. and like i said, you dont need the line driver either.
you CAN do a line driver though, if you want to be able to split up the signal to front, rear, and sub, and be able to control the volume independantly. something like a parametric eq with line driver function.
like the memphis EQP4 or the Hifonics HFEQ both are 4 band eq's and linedrivers. they also both have front, rear, and sub output rca jacks and they have volume controls for all three in addition to the eq functions.

Well I "accidentally" bought an Eclipse EQ1000 from eBay... Can the headphone output push good voltage? I doubt it can since I have two amps and one is a five channel, but you should measure it with a multimeter if you can.
