My wife has a 2005 Ford Escape w/Mach 300 sound system and a 2 gb Ipod Nano. I want to get her an interface that doesn't use FM modulators but these "direct connect" things are $180+. WTH? Its a box and 2 wiring harnesses. I could go buy a new head unit for that money.
What makes them so expensive?

ROTFLOL @ Ballz
Its basically a protocol conversion which allows the oem head unit aux audio input to function and in some cases work your ipod like a cd changer utilizing all available oem controls. Yes $200 seems a lot for " a box and 2 harnesses ", lets do the math:
deck $150-200 ipod adaptor (you wanna use your new toy right?) $30-150 labor (avg) $50 (deck) ipod adaptor ($15-50) interfacing of oem sub/amp combo - $50 parts to install new deck and ipod- $50-75
So lets recap:
oem ipod adaptor $180 (avg) New radio-$ 475 And if you have radio controls on the steering wheel and want to retain them ( Trust me-wifey will have it no other way ) $150 (labor and parts) avg. $625
You choice.
