Are there any certain features you are looking for in a head unit? Since you mentioned the Clarion 9255 i assume you are competing in sound quality. If sound quality is your main concern, i would go with the Clarion. If you are wanting more features and "bells and whistles" i would go with the Alpine cda7949.

Is the 7909 still around? I havent seen one of those since Richard Clark's Buick.

09 if upgraded...9255 is great out of the box.

Both are discontinued.

Having owned several pieces by Nakamichi (mobile tuner 1, cd35,45z,700,original changer), I'd say if your going NEW competition, go Nak. If you can find a 7909, go for it!

If anything could beat Clarion 9255 it would be McIntosh! (which is basically the same head in different cabinet).
The only problem - difficult to link with DSP (analog volume control).

I tried many unit in my shop. (Alpine, Nak, Clarion, Eclipse, McIntosh and Denon)
All slightly different in sound quality but high different in sonic of each unit.
You told me about upgrade '09.
How to upgrade it?

I got a chance to listen to a Clarion 9255 a month or so ago.

I really loved it and I would be get to one but the price tag and college don't really mix..

and the Nak's are unbelieveable..
I love the MB-100

I don't recall the guys name who mods the 09's, but I think Dukk does. I have seen his name on here somewhere. I think it is Chris (Lewis?) someone. I believe he is from Texas or somewhere in the southern states. I see his name mentioned in magazines also.

Dukk.....is that name engraved into your memory bank?

SSA, it is Chris Lewis at pyramid audio. I believe he mods the preouts, not sure exactly what he does, I believe he ups the line out voltage by tweaking the power supply?

Hey Mike (SPL2k), yes the 09 is alive and kicking in the comp circuit. I used one in my truck for a while, and I can think of 4 that are active on the national level for USAC SQ also. 09's are still a nice piece for being 5000 years old

Just the clarify the Chris Lewis issue at Pyramid (the best know tech on the planet for the 09). I still have to send mine to him.
He pretty much dables with the entire guts, from cleaning up the pick ups to tweaking the outputs and power supply to have a more stout, and clean voltage out.

THe S/N ratio is improved by about 10-15 points (he tests it then sends you results on everything) and your Voltage kicks up like a volt, and the internal resistance is tweaked below 100 ohms or so. Also, I believe he will weld (like audioquest cables) RCA's outs of your choice directly to the outputs instead of the weak outputs you get.
I saw someone 2 years ago that cut up a pair of $1k Audioquest RCA's (1/2 meter also) and had them welded to his outputs on his already $1400 09. That is some serious money if you ask me.

Just a few things I can think of off the top of my head.

what about the Eclipse 5303r? i just got one and i love it. it is SUCH an upgrade over this crappy sony i had, i love it so much, 2 things i don't like, 1 the display is kinda iffy in the sun, and 2 i wish that you could tilt the face the other way just not upwords, down would be great for those hella sunny days here in nebraska! and the new ones are even better than the 5303r!

I am happy with my Premier P1R. but for $600 i better be.

With the features like the Time Alignment and DSP, after spending some time with my waveguides, i got me a nice soundstage.

Eclipse is my second choice. of course, the 2000 alpines look pretty nice (not pics on their page yet, tho)

You mean all the deck cost you is 600???? Not bad for all the flashy lights!!!!

Re-issued '09 on ebay went for 1500.00
Nakamichi cd-700 MSRP is 1549.00
Nakamichi mobile tuner 1 was 799.00 and it had NO features other than it could play a disc.
Used '09's on Ebay are still getting upwards of 800.00

I use a DEX-P1R also. It sounds excellent. Definitely a great value. Although, after reading the JANY2K Car Stereo Review of the
NAKAMICHI CD-700, I have been daydreaming quite a bit lately. It would be nice...

The 9575 has not been replaced for this year, thus no 9675. All other models in the line have been, thus 3675 through 8675.

I sent my 7909L to chris lewis, and in addition to the mods Ace mentioned, I also had the decks lighting changed to match my dash illumination and Chris tapped into the circut boards and ran wires out to control
play/pause,track up/down and tuner functions.
this is integrated to my factory steering wheel radio controls.
All done for a very reasonable price too.
