Once when I first started looking for componets for my car I went to a shop and asked the guy what was the difference between the RF fanatic P and Fanatic X components. He said that the X was RF's top of the line set, so I asked him whats the difference between the Fanatic X and the Fanatic Q's and he said the Q's are Really Really top of the line

This is supposedly a true story told to me by Richard Clark and Dave Navone.
Richard hires a new secretary to assist around the office. He tells her to send Dave some information on one of the products he is testing. She says, "How?" He tells her to use the fax machine.
Later that day, Dave calls Richard and asks, "What the hell are you doing over there? You've sent me the same fax 150 times!"
Richard asks the new secretary why she sent Dave 150 faxes. She says, "Everytime I put the papers in the fax machine, they simply come out the other side."
She literally thought the fax machine was supposed to physically send the papers to Dave!
Richard swears this is a true story.

When I was a freshman in college, I was dating this girl who was ... well, her most redeeming qualities weren't her brains. Anyway, this was when police radar detectors were just getting introduced.
We were driving around one day and the radar detector went off. Probably because we were next to a grocery store with the X-band automatic doors. She asks, "What's that?" and points to the radar detector. I say, "It's a cop detector." She seems happy with the answer so I don't explain further.
A few days later, we are eating in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant when a cop walks by. She get's all excited and says, "Why isn't it going off?"
She took me literally when I had told her it was a "cop detector" earlier. Needless to say, I told her all kinds of things after that.

I tap out. There is nothing that I can think of that would even top the Secretary one....rofl!!
I can come close though: In class, I told the "students" to move their mouse to the "My Computer" icon. I hear all kinds of obsenities from the back of the room. Here, one of the ladies has literally picked up her mouse and put it on-top of her computer screen over the "My Computer" icon. She was yelling that when she double-clicked nothing happened. I still think the 150 page Secretary takes the cake though Still laughing at that one

I had a guy once ask me if I could sell him "the 15inch 6x9's".
I once had a guy come to me to troubleshoot his brand new system. The guy had purchased it and had it installed at the local swap meet but he wasn't satisfied. So when I went to see why his amp kept cutting off, this is what I found: He had purchased a Fultron "1000watt" amp that they wired with 16awg power wire. But don't worry they didn't go through all the trouble of running it to the battery and fusing it. I mean they found the perfectly good power wire behind the radio, so every time it would try to play a bass note the radio would starve for power and shut off. Now as for the ground.... they used 16awg with a rig connecter and screwed directly through the carpet. So the was grounded only by the screw because the ring was still on top of the carpet. For the life of me I can't figure out why that setup didn't work as well as the 500watt setup I was trying to sell him for 2-3times the money the week before.

This one goes along with Wayne's posts. Not audio related, but funny as hell. I had to train a new computer user that just bought a laptop from a "Super" store. She had never owned a computer before and needed training in Windows95. I sat her down with her computer and told her to turn it on. She said first she had to plug in her mouse. So I let her plug in her mouse and all then we got underway. First I told her to go into My Computer to explain what was available for use there. Well, keep in mind she plugged in her external mouse, and the machine also had a touch pad. After 2 minutes of her searching for the mouse cursor, she put her finger to the upper corner of the touch pad. Then she goes to me "What the hell's wrong with this thing?" So I look at her and ask her what she means. She was wondering why when she put her finger on the touch pad, her finger didn't show up on the screen! I suggested to her to try the mouse instead. I told her to move the cursor up the screen, so what does she do? Lifts the mouse off the desk about 3 feet. She didn't understand why when she picked up the mouse it didn't move and she was getting noticably frustrated. At this point she is all but standing up trying to get the mouse to move to the top of the screen. So after a 10 minute lecture on how a mouse works, we finally got down to the actual OS training. The double click was the next thing, but thats a whole different story
Hope you all enjoy my frustration

About a year and a half ago my brother moved in with me. He had a cheap optimus stereo(which amazed me at the time) and I asked him while he was hooking it up: "If you've got a cd player, why do you need a reciever? And what the heck is a reciever?" Basking in ignorance, I asked him why the speaker wire and interconnects had to be "matched". He said"I don't know, I think it blows up!" Wish I had this on tape.

oooooooooohhhhh, I just about forget the funniest audio store related thing I have ever heard....It ranks right up there with the FAX secretary one.
This happened at another store here in town.
Guy walks in the store and up to the front counter. He proceeds to ask the salesperson if they have any boxes. The salesperson thinks to himself a minute, then turns around and picks up a cardboard shipping box. He then turns to the customer and asks "will this one work"? Customer then smiles, and proceeds to explain what a box is........
I would have died to been there for that one! Could you just imagine how dumb you would feel after that?

I was working on building a box with a friend of mine who works in our local lumberyard. We're walking to the back of the yard looking for some Liquid Nails, and he says "You know what I'd like to build a box out of? That." And he points to some 1/4" plexiglass. He then proceeds to tell me how if you build a bandpass box out of just plexiglass, when the bass hits it will "shatter" (because the bass hits the plexiglass and is broken up, I assume) and come out of the ports and into the car faster, therefore hitting harder. Twice as hard, I believe is what he told me. He also told me that since the plexiglass is flexible, when the bass hits it bows outward, then springs back. When it springs back, it pushes more air out of the ports, which also makes it hit harder. He told me that "some guy in St. Louis" told him all this, and I seriously hope it was someone off the street, not an employee at a shop down there. I just smile and nod.

"Do you know that you have 72 Volts going to your amps?!?"
He was refering to the 6 batteries I have in the back of my truck used to power the amps. I proceeded to tell him that they are in parallel, but he proceeded to tell me I was wrong and I am running 72 Volts to the amp. At least he could do the math!

I had a woman come to the shop and want XM installed because the Christian music station would keep the demons out of her car. After we went through the process of getting it activated for her and told her she had to talk to XM and give them her credit card number she said OK and left a few weeks later she came back and wanted to return it because she said it never worked besides the preview channels. We asked if she ever contacted XM to activate it and she said she couldnt because the demons were in her phone too.

now i dont like to put down shops, but a big car audio place with a red sign did a horrible install, which i had to fix the other day. i work at best buy. this guy comes in with two bazooka tubes (powered). he says his fuses pop all the time, so they (red place) rewired it to make the fuses not pop anymore. they said it was because they were using 4 gauge to a distro block and two 8s out. so i look and see they now installed two 8 gauge runs down the entire car, into the 4 gauge side of a distro block and 2 8 gauges out (wow that was pointless.) the i notice they gave each tube a different ground. it was in a firebird, with the real high gas tank under the rear windshield. so i hoped they didnt mount his amp to the gas tank. come to find out they were smart enough to use some wood under the carpet, but heres the good part...it was a piece off their show floor, a display for a head unit. lol. i pulled all this crap out, including the head unit, which was wrapped and taped together on the wires. the remote was coming off the accessory, prob why the fuses were popping. also one of the tubes was grounded with 8 or 10 (okay)gauge and the other was grounded with like 12 gauge speaker cable(not okay). and im not lying, this came from a big company. i even had my manager take some pics on his phone to show the shoddy work and rats nest of wires behind the dash, where i was afraid to touch the radio for fear it would catch fire. no worries though, i sent him home bumping and with system looking good and way louder than when he came in. 4 gauge, digital cap, good amp and good subs. amp mounted to MDF nicely under the carpet, only see the cap and amp, no wires. the bazookas werent bad, just not set up well.

heres another one. a few weeks ago, a guy brings me 2 12s and some real cheap amp to hook them up to. he wants us to install it, but i didnt have time so i set up an appointment. he said he was going to put a cap or something in also. he returns (says he tried to install it first with no luck)with an extra battery in the rear and wants to know if i can hook the amp to it. i said no since i didnt install the bat (kinda the rules there for some things). come to find out, all he did was sit the battery in there. he said he had already hooked up to it the other day, and thats why he was back, his amp was shutting off. he said he didnt know why. i said man, this battery is reading 8 VOLTS!, it needs power from the front, you cant just sit a bat in here. he was baffled. no wonder his amp was shutting off. not to mention he didnt even mount the wire to the terminals. they were taped on. ah what a classic.
