I am not one to make fun of the under innformed but I had to share this one. Buddy of mine sent me an IM the one day and asked what color wire on speaker wire it the positive. Well I proceded to tell him. Then he commented well its not hooked up yet just wanted to know so when I hook it up I dont mess it up....hehe...
So my question to you all what is the most amusing question you have been asked?

probably "why don't my subs work?"... well i don't know, why don't your subs work??? an aquatance of mine came to me one day and asked that... said the connections all looked good, so i took a look, as he went uptown to get a mountain dew...had speaker cable plugged into the terminal on the box, so i pulled out one of the subs, and he didn't have any cable INSIDE the box... hehe... he comes back, and he's like "well did ya find the problem?" and i said, nope, haven't a clue

"Why doesn't my system sound any better than it did before ya'll hooked it up?"
so i look at his car, sony head unit, Dbass all the way up, on fact. spekers in a grand prix, so 4x6 and 6x9... probably 99.99% distortion... just terrible, youve all heard it im sure
so i check out the subs and amp we had just put in..... mobile authority "75x4" amp, NOT bridgable, no xover, just bass and treble knobs.. so basically a deck with no tuner. lol 2 pyramid 12inch "subs"... and 2 horn "tweeters" in the box with them
so i get to talkin to him, and come to find out, he bought all this at the extravaganza, which is a HUGE fleamarket show every now and then.... SOME good products, mostly pawn shop and pyramid/legacy crap..come to find out, he paid 13 bucks for the subs, and 25 for the amp.... yeah, you read it right.. and 2 bucks for the "tweeters"
i sold him 2 new subs and a new amp.. god that stuff sounded like complete poo....

I had a friend who took his 2 12" jbl box and his amp out of his car and decied to wire it himself in his new truck. So when hes done he comes around to show it off, all you hear is highs, no bass. He couldnt figure it out so i told him he had to push the switch to low pass not high.
Presto cured the problem

You know, when I first started of in this hobby, I had ABSOLUTELY NO comprehention of this stuff, I didn't know what color positive and what color negative was! (this was when I was 15) Everyone at the stereo shops thought I was a retard and wouldn't help me. This really pissed me off. I went to Circuit City and they were awesome, this is exactly why they are so damn popular is because they are there for the entry level s|-|it, the other stores like Stereo West WILL make fun of you if you don't know what you're talking about, and will take advantage of you! but once you understand the stuff, then they'll pay attention to you
P.S. CIRCUIT CITY BLOWS! hehehe...just had to, they ripped me off so much after I started buying from them...extended service MY @$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Neon, what does age have to do with anything. I started 2 years ago when I was 14 and now I am 16 and I can build, and install just as nice as any shop around here where I live.
any way I had a guy ask me the dumbest question I ever heard. He said" I cut a 10" inch hole in my box for my 10" sub. and it fell through. Why did this happen?" i was laughing so hard I couldn't even answer him.

I just ask lots of questions at different stereo shops. The funny thing is they are all different. example I asked about dual voice coil subs trying to learn about them. One stereo shop talks to me like I am retarded and says not to mess with them. The other tells me all about them tells me that it usually competition thing but if i wanted them it would cost about $10 more than the single voice coil. I just dont understand why they cant explain stuff to you?
I started having an interest in stereos when I was 12 or so, my first system was in my room with two Pyramid 12's placed in garbage cans (little small wastebaskets, not the huge ones) with a tweet ducttaped on the top with a radio shack 2-way crossover running it all. It actually didn't sound to bad I must admit.
I kept stockpiling speakers until eventually I had little piles of speakers in each corner of my room, it was rather funny thinking back now. Then I got my S1's, and built a massive super tower for them, but never finished. It has all been uphill since then, these days I know more than just about any rep in the city, hell I can run circles around them hehe.
Anyway the dumbest question I was ever asked is I once told someone I built stereos in my free time and he asked "so you build the speakers from scratch?" (in the sense of the drivers, not the entire cabinet). I told him no I built the boxes and crossovers for them, he shook his head and said what can be so hard about that, LOL found that a bit funny.

I now realize I am normal...caught the bug at age 15 and still going strong at 25. I feel alot better..lol.
Funniest question ever asked...hmm...had to be a guy who asked why his box sounded bad. I went out to look at the car only to find, he "mounted" the woofer into the cardboard shipping box it came in. He taped up the seams and corners, and to be honest, it was the most solid cardboard box ever...just the wrong airspace...lol

Guy comes in with a pseudo band pass box. Made from 1x4 or 1x6 strips of walnut which were glued together edge to edge. Made in shoip class.
Anyhow....the woofer was mounted in the box on the baffle board...BUT, he had no ports! The woofer was completed sealed (well, as complete as the glue would do) inside the box on both sides. He was wondering why he didn't get any bass
PS. that one above about the 10" hole is funny as hell.

68... I know what you mean. I was lucky enough that when I got into it I was at a shop that know good and well I was buying anything soon and just came there to hang out. Everyone there including the owner Tony was MORE then willing to help out and take a great deal of time explaining stuff to me. I did end up buying stuff there but I dont think it ever was more then they gave me in info.
Jom...That is funny but the other funny think is someone that I know did just that. He build boxes for some 15's for another friend and put them in his truck. We found out later when we took them out of the truck there were holes in the box and wood was cut wrong and there were sizeable gaps and what not. He didnt take the time to cut it right and didnt take the time to seal the holes.
After a while I asked this person about this and he said "Well the box was smaller them specs so the holes were to release the pressure in the box. :O Other funny thing is he really is a good installer just had a brain fart I guess.

A friend of mine builds his box... 1/2" wood- the $10 per sheet wood chip wood...weak, just horrible wood... uh oh.
He tells me he ported it, and it sounds like ass... I ask where his ports are. He points to a 1/2" hole in the box... I ask him what he did.... "I drilled my port"... I plugged it with my fingers and he asked why it sounded better..... SIGH.

Rob, my first pro installer job was with Sound Central MANY MANY years ago!!! I think I started there in 90 or 91... Bill Eades was the manager then, Damn that man taught me a lot! That was long long long before they did they're remodel.... Anyway, I digress....
Had a guy come in once with his box, didn't understand why he got nothing at all out of it. I went and took a look at it. Appearantly, this guy lived under a rock near the core of the earth... he actually had a sealed box with the woofer mounted INSIDE of it! I say mounted, it wasn't, it was just laying inside the box... wired up... but actually INSIDE a sealed box... I still get a chuckle now that I'm thinking of it!!!!!

I had a freind in the car for the first time and I pumped up the system, he looks at me and says "WOW this system is awesome, is it stock?" I said yes and now he thinks that Rockford Fasgate makes acura's system... BTW he didn't look in the trunk

I knew this guy who wanted to know why his CD's were so hot when they ejected. Well, I saw something that didn't look correct, so I pulled his CD player...
Instead of using the mounting kit, the moron wrapped the head unit (Clarion) in CARPET to take up slack in the mounting...
Lucky bastard never did catch fire...

I got one. I went to a shop here in College Station about 2 years ago to get a 3 inch port for my box. So I ask the salesman if he has one and he says yes and then he goes and gets it.
So he comes back with a terminal cup and asks me "is this a port?" I just laughed at him a little and went on to tell him what a port is and give him a description of what it looks like.
You should have seen the look on the guy's face. It was a "What the hell are you talking about?" kinda look.

but it is so much fun to see how much knowledge the dude behind the counter really has Some guys, you know they know their schtuff. Others, oh boy - time for them to be sweeping the floors, the shop just needed a warm body.
My favorite though: The subs can run on 8 watts RMS...so I just hooked them up to my radio. Why don't they sound like your 10" boxes? (Mind you, the boxes were not on anything great, but that Malibu pushed more than 10 watts RMS .)
Hey, we all gotta learn sometime. Better with a laugh than with an accident .
