Ok - so there I was - 3am - tired as could possibly be - but DANGED anxious to get the last bit of wiring done. Im hooking up the wires to the new Stinger 5farad cap I had.....oh it was a beauty - bigger than most amps - digital readout - oh it was nice. A few more sparks than I am used to when I connect it - but ah well - got the cables tightened down and started to walk away.......
<sniff sniff> - whats burning? And whats that sizzling sound? Who knew there was a type of battery acid inside those caps? Ya know that stuff can boil out? And do you know it burns when you grab it? Yeah - its not a nice thing to do.
So - 1 cap later, I learned my lesson. + is for Positive and - is for Negative. Gosh - Who'd a thunk it?!?!?!
Such a clever group of people we are in this industry......now - if only I could learn to read.
Who else has done something so stupid? Come on - Im not the only one - please tell me Im not the only one.
I know - Death and Sergio will tell me Im the only one - but I never listen to them - although - they do make me laugh.

my roommate thought that the - terminal on the battery would give the amp power, he was in the dark so i can't really hate on him for it, but i didn't think he would do such a thing and tested everything else for three days till i finally broke down and checked it, didn't fry anything though.

I hooked up an El1500 in my buddys cutlass ciera and I went to connect the ground wire to the metal area in the trunk and I tried it twice before I realized that that those were a lot or sparks and so I looked and I was holding the blue power wire.

Well just the other day I hooked up my power to ground, and ground to power. It turns out I drilled the hole for the ground wire in my amp rack in the wrong place. Blew all three fuses on my amp.

had a battery spill in my truck. first thing i did was pick the battery up to get it upright fully coating both my hands with battery acid. It had a nice burning sensation but all it really did was turn my hands a little red and itchy for a little while. it really isnt near bad enough for me to fear touching it.

See - I knew it wasnt just me. Although - I'm still waiting for something from Iggy on here. I'm sure at some point he put the twinkie down on a battery and it sparked between the + & - posts of the battery - causing a twinkie explosion and creme filling to fly everywhere. There HAS to be a story like that SOMEWHERE - doesnt there?

Forgetting to cut the mounting hole for a sub is no fun. The surprising look on my face and pondered for a sec as to why the spkr fell through the hole was no fun. Boy, was I upset. And you guys better be thankful for the fuses on those amps!! I'd rather pay 50 cents for some fuses, or whatever they cost, than buying another 400 dollar amp, give or take a few hundred.

Ok - I have to update this thread - as much as it pains me to do so. I have done it yet again. I would like to formally request to all the vendors out there - please PLEASE PLEASE - dont just make wires that you supply black. This becomes very confusing to those of us who have been installing for 18 straight hours.
Ok - so the story. I needed to supply a power, remote and ground wire to my X-over, and yes, it was an "after thought" to do this. This was oversight #1 on my part. But I had some wires back there I could just splice into with no problem. So I did so. Only - OOOPS. The Orion Remote Gain Control just happens to be a black wire also, and I grabbed that by accident when grabbing the ground wire. Yeah - thats not such a good idea. No major damage caused, but I am sure running a 12v ground to the remote gain inputs on the amp, probably not a great idea.
took a bit to find my mistake, it was amazing the popping noises I got from the subs when I moved that wire too. WOW - thank goodness no damage was really done.

After having been an electrician for 10 years now, I find that I sort all of my wiring, mark, label, do whatever it takes... I havent crossed a wire yet...power source related anyway.
I have managed to cross speaker wires and gotten them out of phase before, but nothing pyroglyphical.

I have to admit that I wired my cap wrong and only fried the fuses in my amp.I didn't have any spares so I searched frantically for two 40 amp fuses. No one had any and then I came across a Circuit City. The sales guy gave me two fuses to replace in my amp(no charge).I ran my car through the lanes with less than 15 minutes to spare and took first.I now double check my installs before a show."Trial and Error" is the best learning tool.
