I live in a small town where huge bump is considered an aftermarket 6x9. But I go to school in a nearby city with a few good pawn shops and have put together a good system, and all my friends from the little town got pissed so they started to get systems too. My friend Oliver bought a nice new pair of Coustic 15's and built a nice box, with neon and a cute little plexiglass window, but ended up cramming the box almost completely full of stuffing to get them to sound good. Well anyway, we were bored on a cold night and he hadn't purchased an amp yet, and had run them just on his friend's 400 watt, so we decided to hook them up to my amplifier, an old digital Clarion 1000 watt. We drove out to a quarry and turned them loose. Now keep this in mind. First, Oliver was against this from the start, as he paid too much for the speakers in the first place and spent 100 bucks to build his box. Second, his Coustics are running parralel, on a 2ohm load at 850 watts apiece power handling, and my amp only puts out maybe 500 or something at the appropriate setting. So we pounded them, louder and louder... Louder yet. My fuel shutoff switch tripped, the voltage dipped almost to zero, and I blew a 60 amp fuse...
God only knows what kind of spl happened, but I popped the trunk to turn the switch back on and was greeted to the smell of burning speaker.
There was sure alot of smoke. Ha ha it was on fire! We busted the plexiglass with a hammer and quenched the fire and went home. All Oliver was left with was a pee soaked box with a bunch of melted plastic stuff inside and a pair of blown Coustics. Ahh, the power of bass!
