I was in a residential area, that was my #1 screwup, my #2 screwup was playing Eminem's Say what you say (not sure of the name of song). I had come to a complete stop behind a dump/garbage truck. This police cruiser pulled up behind me, motion me over to the side, I am wondering what I did wrong. He asked me the reason for my stereo being heard over 100 feet away. I told him that there is NO way that can happen, under the circumstances (dump truck, etc..). He then told me he actually heard me aprox 250ft away, and heard before he seen the car. I started thinking he was full of sh*t. After he wrote the ticket, and I signed it, he told me that the lady on the porch behind us signaled him of my loud music. He also said he would not of heard me if it wasnt for her telling him about the car. This lady's porch was onlyt 10 feet from the road. Now, I heard the dump/garbage truck, I also heard all the noise going on around me. I even heard the cops car horn blow and his siren. Now, if my stereo could be heard at 250ft, or even 100ft, then the law of nature would tell you, I WOULD NOT HEAR CRAP while in my car playing the stereo that loud. It is not possible. Let use a train for an example. Has anybody heard a train 100ft away? Has any of you also heard a train 5 ft away? Do you notice the differance in sound levels? You can't hear sh*t at 5 ft away. Anyways, the Law of The State of Florida states that a car stereo system must not be heard 100ft away from vehicle. I do not think I came even close to that, but have no way of proving it. I am going to pay ther measly fine of $44.00, which is just a drop in the bucket for me. I am going to send a copy of everything that I have stated above to my lawyer and to the city of Jacksonville, and let them be a judge of it, which I'll probably lose anyway, but at least they'll know I aint gonna stand for the crap. I guess if a person yells out the window of a car, and it could be heard 100ft away, then they would write a ticket for that also? What about ice cream trucks that play that god awfull high pitched noise which can be heard 40 blocks away, why dont they get fined? Or what about jackhammers being used in a residential area at 9pm at night, isn't that a noise pollution problem? Why dont they get fined? Just to let you know, I am a responsible basshead, when in a residential area, I try to keep the stereo very low, or turned off. I have also turned off my amplifiers while in a residential area. I do not try to pollute on purpose.
Oh btw..after I got back to work, after the incident, I turned my stereo on to the same volume setting I had it when I got pulled over. I walked 50ft feet away, yes I could hear the stereo, BARELY! I heard the car more than the stereo.

Around here (Charleston SC) you can get a noise ordinance ticket if your music can be heard outside your car! What kind of BS is that? My mom's stock radio could get a freakin ticket! My friend got a ticket and the cop told him that he could not hear his dispatch radio from a bout 300 ft. I was like BULLS***! You can hear even when he's bumpin hardcore, so I know that cop was lyin. To bad for my friend, 400 dollar fine!
I was stopped once, but my old system wasnt near that loud. I know the new one will get me a ticket if Im not careful.
Cop at my school told me that if 2 people call you in on a complaint about noise while you are driving, they will fine you 1000 and impound your car. THAT is nuts, yet true. ALso, Harleys are violators also. Me and a friend dialed in a guy on a harley at a redlight (he was gunnin it, I couldnt hear my treble) and i saw him down the road later with a cop, so it does work.
I HATE ALOT OF LAWS!!!

A friend of mine got a ticket for "excessive noise" and took it to court, the judge listened to him and said this to teh cop "You gave this kid a ticket for his stereo?, dont you cops to anything around here?" and threw it out. Was the funniest thing i ever saw.

Where I live you can get any amount up to $600 fine for Noise Pollution....The cop gets to choose the amount up to $600. Most of the time you get a warning or avg ticket is $400.

bignick, I am not far from you, and can tell you that many of my customer's get tickets. Our law is similar 50ft at XX db, but they don't carry db meters, so how do they know?
We actually have 2 car audio shops here that CAN NOT play the systems they install, because the cops are there within 2 mins. 1 shop actually installs everything, then sends the customer down the road about 1.5 miles to listen to it. So I tell them to send all their customer's to my shop to pound until they get sick of it. They don't bother my shop.
I don't sweat it alot, as it is only a city ordinance, and we do the work for the judge on his cars.

cool, we have a lot of people from SC here, i live in columbia, and visit charleston a lot. i have never gotten a ticket, and i beat damn loud in residental areas, actually its a lot to do with knowing your location, and im always lookin out for cops so when i see one i turn it down asap. it think thats about the only reason i havent got a ticket cause im always on the lookout. and the maxima does a good job of keeping sound in the car, people tell me they can hear me from 3 blocks away. but when a cop is in there. its pretty laid back about systems here, you can sit and a parking lot almost anywhere and beat, even if they hear your system, they most likely wont pull you unless your really pissing them off or sitting right next to them beating. cause i have rode past many cops beating loud but cut it down right when i get up on them and they just kinda look at me. oh yeah and 3rd offence tickets can run over $1,000 here.

I am in Beaufort, BTW. Those Whitlee shows never get advertised around here. We hear about them AFTER they are held.
Yeah we have those type of unmarked cars too...Sometimes they are Corvettes and Turbo Volvos lol good thing they only go on the freeway I only know of 1 city thats close to seattle that has unmarked cars that actually drive through the city.

I was driving to Tulsa for Thanksgiving and saw one person pulled over on 69/75 by an Intrepid and another by a Tahoe. Surprised the heck out of me. First time I'd ever seen either of those used unmarked, first time I'd seen an Intrepid used by cops period. Another time I pulled over and called *55 when a van caught fire on I-35. One of the first people there was a guy in a sweet blue Yukon with white strobes in the headlights. I think that may have just been for first responder type stuff though. The unmarked cars I saw on 69/75 at least had reds and blues.

Damn, I meant to respond to the above post earlier... I have read articles about Ice Cream trucks getting fined. I want to say it was in AZ somewhere?
As far as heavy machinery, I KNOW our local ord. exempts it between certain hours. We have a small district of our city that live bands can't even play in because they can't turn the amps down far enough, so they wind up either playing unplugged, or saying F-it and walking out.
Guys these laws aren't to hurt us, they are there to protect the others. I will state that our law is partly in place because of me and my boys back in the days when we ran wild with stereos. We didn't care where we were or what time it was, we PLAYED IT HARD!
Now, I sit in my home at night w/ my 5 year old sleeping in her room, and SOME ASS drives by WIDE ASS OPEN after 9pm. Let's give some respect. Pay attention to where you are and what is going on around you. Don't bass out when you pass a funeral, when small kids are running around, turn it down for god's sake, not because the kids don't need to hear it, because YOU can't hear someone screaming that a child is about to run out in front of you!
If the bastard that came down my road(less than a 1/4 mile long) pounding at 45mph in the White older Explorer and came WAY too close to my daughter while she played in MY YARD, EVER comes back through here....Myself and the COP next door will not lose sight of him next time! I promise you HE WILL GO TO JAIL...that was the quote from the cop.

Im not saying im a cold harted bastard for doing that but I am always on the look out like mentioned earlier. Im not trying to start a flame war or anything. Later Guys.

yes also i have seen some pretty strange unmarks, like a big ass black excersion, it looked pretty nice. but yeah when i see kids or really anyone around i usually cut it down, unless im on a busy road where every car is going like 45 mph, really not many can hear it. also i just got a new line driver so my system is more then 2 times as loud now, i will start being more careful.

i have got a couple of tickets for my system.and a few warnings as well. the one night on my way home i got stopped by a cop that was in front of me he said that he could hear my stereo, but what i don't understand was we was going down the road at 55 mph and he was over 100 feet ahead of me, he told me that all he could do was tell me to keep it down a little because there was not a law about the noise in the country but if someone complained about it he would have to write me a ticket for disturbing the peace.
My dad rides Harleys and has had some kind of motorcycle basically his whole life, starting with a 50cc Harley. He says they do get stopped for revving it up unnecessarily in town. Bikers basically think the same way most bassheads do. "We get stopped for noise when these kids with systems drive around making all kinds of noise and never get pulled over." It works both ways, guys. When they see people like us pulled over, they don't usually know it was for sound so they think it never happens. I know if I saw a Harley pulled over, I'd assume it was for speeding or wrecklessness or something. Wouldn't think twice about it, and it could be for sound.
Just pointing out the opposite point of view, so don't flame me!
Also, to Porter_Audio, they DID pay for their property and you are interfering with their right to enjoy it peacefully. I don't have a problem with cranking it up on the highway, but be respectful when in residential areas.

As I stated, I do try to keep the bump down while in a residential area. I did not think I had it loud enough to bother anybody, since I could hear everything going on around me. I have been paying attention to my system lately and have come to the conclusion, I need to invest in a serious amount of deadener. I believe that if my trunk area, which was deadened before changing to the new enclosure, wasn't rattling, I would not have gotten a ticket. The song I was playing hits a the right frequency throughout the song to vibrate the hell outta the whole rear of the car. I did pay the ticket. What's $44.00? I also got word from a few people that are on the city council (friends of the family). They said I should have fought the ticket, but since I already paid it wouldnt be worth it. No problem, I hope. I will be deadening the car, especially the trunk area, next week (hopefully). That "should do the trick, and at the levels I play the system normally, I should not have any more problem. Strange though, I have been messing with car audio systems since I was 14, never had one of my installs get a ticket, and I never got one until the other day. I must have been doing some really poor installs before, and finally hit on something that make people take notice, even the wrong people Oh well..hehe

ALso around here you can get tickets for "Loud Exhaust" if you get pulled over passed 10PM it can be a double fine if they wish...Disturbing the Peace and Loud Exhaust(really says modified)...Harleys dont get fined because they come stock with loud exhaust. Go figure.
