What's the wierdest thing you've seen used (by yourself or others) to insulate a connection.

I think the best I've seen was Band-Aids!
Yup, that's what one guy used for his entire deck/powered eq install. Then he came to me and said "I don't know why it smokes sometimes". Oh, and he was the same guy who said "my cousin did it".

I was helping a friend install his system, nice equipment, but the RF 4s in the dash kept shorting on him. I checked and he used silicone sealent filled around the wires... Musta have missed a crack

I've seen some use clear "Magic" tape, the white athletic tape, and I've used Duct Tape. Hell, can't fix it, Duct it!!! For the really pesky problems, use Gaff tape

Gaff tape = Duct tape on 'roids!! Use it profusely in the stage business. My old roomy's sister used it to hold her car together, honestly!!

well, I got a good laugh when I saw a guy who just went through "extensive" Best Buy installer training.....

he stopped by to get some connectors for something he was working on....
picked up a couple of bullet connectors and proceeded to put two wires in the WRONG END and then squeeze it with a pliers....

things that make you go hmmmmmm....

I had a computer that had a motherboard designed for a tower-type case, and put into a table-top type. The P.C.Board was insulated from high points of the chassis by PAPER! Needless to say I found this out after several re-boots. I used scotch tape, and band aids if I didn't have something proper in emergencies only.

I don't know how many cars I've dug into that only use one side of a butt connector to crimp both wires.... What's the other side for, a second shot at it?!?

My favorite insulator is just spacing the wire far enough apart between the carpet and underlay.....

One hot glue tip: If you don't like the practice of soldering speaker connections, use a spade connector and hot glue it in place after it's on. Speaker is still easy to change in the field and the spades never accidentally fall off

I don't know what's worse when hooking up speakers in the trunk, hot glue or solder dripping on your arm. I think hot glue, it stays hot longer.

Hmm. Depends on if you use flux when you solder..... burns hella bad. but not as bad as hot glue.

Ready for this one! (and yes this is true)
I had a kid come in tho the shop to try to figure out why his amp keep shuting down and why his head unit would lose power every time he turned the lights on. Well the deck problem was a no briner and I knew the problem right away so when i pulled the deck out of the dash to fix it. To my surprise there was an old sock wraped around the wiring and held in place with what looked like liquid nails. As i removed the sock i could see more of this stuff at the wires. It turned out he had put liquid nails on the wires then ripped pieces of sock up to cover them while they dried and then wrapped the whole thing in another sock to keep them from moving around. Ill give you one guess what was holding the amp to the box.......

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but isn't electrical tape (or many proper methods) cheaper than liquid nails and socks? Heck, band-aids would have been cheaper! Sounds like the old fabric they used to use to insulate wires back in the 20's. Maybe the guy was in to restoring antique radios.

No he wasnt from Northern MO but kinda close the sticks of Adams co ILL where are you from alrile you dont sound too far away. And for another wierd one i had a guy who wanted to do a "competion quailty" install so he drilled a 4in hole in the floor of his car and ran all his wireing in a 4in drain tube (looks like huge black split loom) that would not be so bad but it was going back to the extented part of his s10 pickup. I want to hear more on the "competion quality installations"

I have it on VERY good authority that a vehicle (a BMW) that a VERY famous ROCKFORD employee/sponsoree (not Wayne)built which had a power1000 behind a trim panel in the trunk was a knotted, spaghetti bowl with fire hazards galore. I will not mention the gentlemans name, but, when I was in my first season, he was competing heavily, and had an article in a mag called Bavarian Music Werks or something like that... it's been about 10 years ago...

Was that BMW an 87' 325i? If I'm thinking of the same person, I think it actually was a Power 650, though he may have used a 1000 at one time but he preferred the sound of the 650. That's only if I'm thinking of the same person. I got to know him and his system pretty well, he somehow got a hold of the original Symmetry system to run everything. That car did sound real good though.

I did get to see behind that panel, I was there the day he was changing everything around and installing the Symmetry module in the spare-tire well. I ended up being there for 7 hrs. watching him tweek the XOM and DSP modules. That wiring of the 650 inside the trunk panel against the back of the car was atrocious... I didn't think it would be left that way. At that time he was using dual banana plugs during the adjustments so he could invert polarity on the fly and not have to rewire everything individually. I was quite impressed by that approach.
