My uncle has had this MTX6500D for a while now that he hasnt been using because he got a JL 500/1. He came down about a week ago and he said something about selling it, so i asked him how much and he said 100 bucks. I didnt think anything about the price because it was my uncle and his brother which is my dad was sitting right there. I told him he'd have to wait until the next day so i could give him the money and he said ok. Next day rolls around and he wakes up around 4 in the afternoon ( had a hard night at the strip joint the night before ) and asks if i was still buying the amp and i said yes. So we walk out to his car and he pops the trunk and hands it to me and i check out his new stuff. I gave him the money and he talked to my dad and his other brother for a few minutes and left. I asked him several times if he was sure it worked and he kept saying yes. After he left i jokingly said to my dad i would be pissed if it didnt work. Then the phone rings and its my gf and she asked if i had hooked up the amp yet and i said no, and she asked if he was there and i said no he had left. Next thing she says was well what if it doesnt work. I got off the phone and unhooked my old amp and took the wires directly from the old amp to the 6500d, ground first, remote then power. Soon as i touched the power to it it started smoking, so i immediately took it off. Touched it again and it let out some more magic smoke, took it off checked wires again ( just in case ) nothing wrong hooked power back into the amp. Put the power back to it and no smoke, then all of a sudden i hear POP..POP. So i unhooked it all together and hooked my old amp back in to find out my subs are blown. So here i am with a blown amp and blown subs, needless to say i was highly pissed. Im not worried about the subs i only paid 80 bucks for the pair of 12's, but it cost me 130 more dollars to get my amp shipped in to get it repaired. So now i have 230 bucks in it which isnt too bad but im still pissed because he sold me a blown amp. I was gonna order new subs anyway so im not really sweating those. So now im riding around with alot of treble and no bass for a freakin month. Sorry for the rant i just had to vent somewhere Posts: 10 | From: Louisville, Ky | Registered: Aug 2002

first rule to the game you played.when buying something, if it isnt hooked up in front of you and then disconnected then you hook it up first to verify it DOES WORK. doesnt matter who it is. always check first.
second rule, only hook up power ground and remote first. once done turn on and make sure it turns on. then hook up the rcas and then hook up one sub at a time. NEVER hook up subs and rcas then power wires incase of something going bad and shorting your subs.
well, next time be careful and did you say anything to him about it?

my thoughts exactly... although by the sounds of it, he didn't. So I don't think it's your uncles fault!

I found this post difficult to understand. It sounds like you blew your amp then want to blame it on your uncle

it shouldnt matter if the battery was discoe'd or not...that only helps you prevent from accidentally touching pos/neg together and causing a short. Its not going to make his amp blow up guys.
His uncle sold him a ****ed up amp, thats all there is to it.

PtownTSI, your right, but then again, anything can happen by accident, and w/o you even noticing! Lose wires and a connected battery are NEVER a good thing. Point being, it could go either way. His uncle may have sold him a bad amp, although it could have also been him hooking it up. Its a matter of opening up the amp and seeing exactly what it was the blew!

After weeks of trying to get ahold of him i finally did. I asked him about the amp and he actually confessed about it being blown. I dont know what exactly was blown but it was bad, big sparks are not your friend. I know i shouldve hooked it up before he left but that was my mistake. And btw i did have the fuse out of the power wire, i wouldve mentioned earlier but i was pretty mad when i posted that.

If there was no fuse where would that power be coming from?

When i put the fuse back in it started going crazy. I even went as far as taking the fuses out of the amps and it was still sparking etc. I dont have any clue what was up with it, it was posessed.
