Ok, whoever is raggin on Best Buy for putting down other products because they don't sell them... talk to the installers. I work at BB here in Maryland, and my managers hate me. I only sell one combination of system to people, I tell them that most of what we carry is crap, and that if they really want something big to wow their friends, they should do some reading online. of course, when it comes down to it, i've always said one thing: Nobody can tell you what's the Best. Only your own ears can. Some people like the sound of our $30 Jensen speakers over the 4-way Pioneers. it's all a matter of opinion.

I told him he was full of it.. he got mad and said i don't know anything about car audio ( lmao) and he got all defensive. I asked him which brands, and which amps, and how many batteries and what kind, what freq did he play.. yaddah yaddah... he got quiet.. then later after i left, he said to my friend, "maybe it wasn't 230dB.. but it was loud.".. umm.. as far as we know.. it was his friend's van, and they put a pair of 6x9s in it with an amp... THAT'S IT !
the uncle in question is a complete moron. I would compare him to "cliff" from Cheers.. but cliff is a lot smarter !! a LOT

Instead of arguing with him you should of asked what type of gass he filled his car with. After he asked what you are talking about you could of then shared with him that it is physicly impossible to hit 230db with our atmosphere.

"I like to go into shops and ask questions like: "whats the slew rate on this amp" or "whats the input impedence" or "whats the FS on this sub"....just for laughs."

I don't ask those exact things but I'll go in there and ask about some subs or tell them I'm looking for a sub that has a high qts. I have my reasons for doing this, it's because that is the product I am looking for. What amazes me is that I have yet to find a shop in the chicago land area that has been able to help me. The only one is a shop in macomb,IL. They really know their stuff but I don't goto school out there anymore.

and jarfunkz a shop may not be a tech school but they should be educated in audio. I think it's good to ask questions to asses their knowledge. Would you buy a product from an idiot? I know I wont. Thats why most of my shopping is online.

Nebben,
World Records are taken at the dash with a B&K meter, not an Audio Control under the dash. For the legal world record the mic element is place 12" from the A pillar (that is the one by the windshield), 4 inches up from the dash at that point, and 1 inch from the glass. SPL is a little lower there than under the dash. Also the B&K is a lot tighter meter than Audio Control. My Outlaw SPL is about 6-7 db higher than my legal world record.

well, rhino... i appreciate you chasing me around an internet forum and correcting me on stuff, especially to topics posted well over a year ago. and yes, i'm aware that outlaw scores will be louder than legal 99 out of 100 times. however, i never asked nor mentioned it being some form of "outlaw" record, nor did i say anything about what meter it was on. thanks anyways..

That's not a sound system, it's either a nuclear blast at ground zero or the sonar system of the USS Seawolf...

Damn, the loudest thing i've heard from so far is a sonar, wich has been tested at 233 dB at 900-some feets underwater (Read here, bone crushing pressure)

Hehehe! Hope you laugh a lot at him...

Don't know if anyone has said this cause I stopped reading at your post but. The loudest a sound can get in our atmosphere is 183 or 187 db (I don't remember which) because the air compresses basically into nothingness any higher, a black hole or vortex kind of effect....

233 db in water may be possible I'm not sure how water effects the ability of air to compress..

Something's not right there, do you know what it is? [Wink]

But i'm still not clear on how there can be a limit to SPL without liquefying air. Hear me out:

SPL is just a change from low pressure to high pressure air. The greater the change, the higher the SPL. So on one side we have the limit on how much rarefaction can take place. When the area in front of the cone has turned into a virtual vacuum, we cannot decompress it any further. The other end of the spectrum would be compression. We can theoretically compress air until it turns to a liquid, correct? I would think that point would be a lot higher than 190dB. I'm wondering if we could mathematically figure this out.

Sorry for getting off topic, i just always wondered about that.
