I entered my first db comp yesterday and got my butt kicked. I dont understand the whole spl thing. First of all I went into qualifications playing a rap cd when everybody else had test cd's or some bass cd. I hit 137db the first time around, and the guy that was putting the mic in the car asked if I had a bass cd and I said no. He told me before I go for my second qualification to go and buy a bass cd because all of the vocals in the rap was making me lose spl. I went and bought some bass mechanic cd and found a track I thought had a good amount of bass in it. I go up for my second time and only hit 130, what the hell did I just do. I felt real dumb up there in front of all those people. I'm really into the whole cosmetic side of installations and am not too familiar with the sound particulars like staging, imaging, tuning and such. Oh by the way I forgot to put down the back seat of the vehicle in the vehicle I was competing with. I dont know if that really would have made a big difference being that it was a ported enclosure firing through the rear armrest. The system consists of 2 RF DVC 12" in a ported enclosure running off of a 800.2 bridged at 4ohms. Ample Audio 6.5 components in the front and RF 3way 6x9 in the rear running off a 400.4. Where did I go wrong.

Well, next time fold down the backseat, that never hurts. Do you know how to find your res. frequency? You could just experiment with test tones and find out which tone is loudest in your car. The best thing to do is find that frequency, have all your settings turned where you want them and just burp your system for a brief moment. The reason is because you will get alot better voltage to your amp. If I didn't explain this very well, I know someone on here can do better. Good luck.

Instead of playin a musical track, you will be better off using a track from one of Termpro's CD's or Bass Mekanik's test area tracks. The bass is pure, clean, and strong. A normal burp is around 3-5 seconds. I usually do 4 seconds starting low volume to my max volume. I like to call that a Rolling Burp. Saves on the equipment but doesnt always help your over all SPL. The rear seat down might gain you a 1-1.5 db. Finding the Cars frequancy is essential to high SPL. Once you find that range or exact tone your good to go. Oh yea, maybe slight box position could help you out as well.
