i think the one that made me laugh the hardest was this old caprice that came in to get an alarm installed because all of his stuff was just stolen. the car was done in all white leather that had never been taken care of. i mean everything was white leater, the seats, dash, door panels. but it had been faded and worn down to dirt colored. So i guess after the interior started to get dirty, he put plastic over his seats, like old women do to their couches in their houses. so every time you moved you about slid off the seats.

well the install part was that it was a 4 door that had 5 coaxials in each door. the were put in various places on the door and it really looked like crap. But the best part was that for the 10 sets, yes thats 10 sets of coaxials, he had at least 4 different brands. and they didn't match up, the different brands were randomly put in different spots. there were alpine, JVC, pioneer, and kenwood coaxials all over the car's doors. plus he had added like 3 sets of tweets to each door. this thing had so many highs in it, that it must have been unbearable.

Got my strokers from you...heh. You had what, shocker SS 15's right? I remember you shipped the strokers in SS boxes, lol. What kind of numbers did you put up?

As for my contribution to this section of the site...

My cousin had a jeep cherokee a while back. One of those jenson 300x2 amps (blue heatsink and the diamond plate (?) in the middle of it), and 2 12" RF powers...SVC versions from way back in the day.

Anyway, this was put into a box with a crooked 4x4" square port in the middle, was made out of .75" particle board.

Wire was tapped off the fuse box (lol), until ^finally^ it was correctly ran from the battery.

The best part is that it was VERY loud. VERY VERY loud, lol... I was 10/12 when this install was done, and I remember at one point it got so loud we jumped out of the car because we couldnt breathe.

Was incredible! Another 12, new amps...nothing ever made it any louder than it was when we first installed it.

A fairly ghetto install that got the job done, only wish we woulda got it metered [Smile]

Well my 1st "system" was pretty damn embarrasing. I was 15 and didn't even have my license for my Blazer yet. My parents went out of town so I decided IT WAS ON. I had my buddy (a senior at the time) come over since he could drive. That night, with the help of a screw driver and some electrical tape, I had my 1st experience with BASS.

Check these specs.
2 Fisher Home speakers in Home cabinets out of my bedroom

12" Sub, 2 4" mids, and a 1" tweet in EACH box.. aww yeah.

Try and keep up with my wiring diagram if ya can:
Placed both enclosures in the rear cargo are of the Blazer (facing up of course)
Unscrewed rear 6x8 covers, Mated each enclosure + and - to their respected sides of the 6x8 leads.

Proceeded to crank up stock Delco tape player and jam "BOOM I GOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND" by boys from the bottom.

That's right.. 8 WATTS PER CHANNEL from a stock Delco deck driving 2 12's, 4 4's, and 2 tweets... and that was JUST THE REAR CHANNEL!! FEAR ME!!

And to think we did that a few other weekends and cruised up down sorority row.. jeezus I was a dork..

Thanks to knowing Shawn F, I am now a wiser man [Big Grin]

still cant figure this one out...

the first deck i had in my truck was a cheapo alpine i bought from a friend. i got the proper wiring harness, hooked everything up, and it worked fine, sometimes. other times the deck had no power at all. i thought the problem was a bad wire or loose conection but that all checked out ok. i finally realized that the deck only had power at night. for some reason the power wire for the stock stereo was wired in series with the headlights. go figure

well my story is it as funny as some i've been reading but hear it goes.

About a year ago my friend had got is licence and wanted to put a little system in his uncles car.his uncle works at the junk yard so he goes looking throw the cars alot.Anyways he had found a portef pre made box for a 12,and then went out and bought a pioneer 12 for like $120.He didn't even know about the air space for the sub are anything. He asked me to help install it and i told him want he need and everything but i wasn't able to help him do the install i had other things to do.

Anyways he got some hick that he knew do it,so on the monday i think it was he came to me saying my sub keeps cutting out.so i asked want size wire etc he was running. So i poped up the hood and attacted to the battery was a 18 gauge wire that was running to his amp.It gets even funner for his ground the kid had taking the negitive side of a speaker wire and hooked that up to the set bolt for the ground. For his rca's,he didn't bother buying one of those line out converters to keep his stock cd playing that he had taken out of a dodge caraven.so the kid that help him had sliced of some of the speaker wire on the stock harness and then cut the rca's and wraped them around the rear speaker out puts on the factory harness.

P.s i forgot to ad,that when ever you would want to listen to a cd you would have to punchthe radio.HAHAHAHAHA

That is one of the funniest things i have ever seen.

Right now,he still has the same car but has upgraded that cd player to a pioneer 1400,and upgraded that 18 awg to 4 gauge power wire he still has that speaker wire as his ground but it isit to the seat bolt anymore he moved it to latch on his folding down seat.I've told him many times that he should ground it to the body but never listens.

about that new cd player he put in,he keep telling me he was blowing the harness [Roll Eyes] so he hard wired it in what a Dumbass.

sorry for such the long reply but i wanted to tell every detail.

In Belgium a certain store (very cheap brands like rockwood..., lousy working people, no refund.. ) sells condensators and they advertise this :

Put a C*A*Liber condensator in your car and you gain 10 Db !

Now if you believe this , how stupid can you be ? Yet I know someone who bought a condensator down there, you know by putting him in he would gain 10 Db he said, so I told him I would buy 10 condensators.. [Big Grin] 100 Db I would gain than, he didn't understand why I laughed and had tears in my eyes only from imangeninating it !

"So this is how the loud extreme cars get there Db's !" he replied to me looking seriously !

Yeah, So i had my first system ever: Rockford Fosgate MP3 cd player and two hand me down 10" jbl subs. I thought I was the bomb. Well one night, this guy walks up to me and offers me 150 cash for the cd player right then and there. SO i was like sure, why not. He takes the cd player out buy just cutting all of the wires. Thing was he cut the wire between the harness and the cd player. So then he had to cut the wire again, splice some wires back together and then it might work.

Well he got everything installed in his truck at the time and he was in love with it. Thing was he did not have all the wires hooked up...or hooked up correctly and the cd player did not work correctly. Well he went ahead and bought my subs off of me as well. He built himself a box and put the subs in it. It sounded horrible and he though he was now THE BOMB. Ends up he gets his **** stolen 2 days later and he never gets any of his equipment back. Hopefully the guy who stole it was smart enough to hook up the cd player the right way!!! hahahhahahahaha

i got a few but lets see how you like this one.

when i was, oh probley 14 or 15 me and a buddy decided t was time to hook up his system, but he had no car.

so we take his setup, 2 blaupunkt 12's and a pyramid 600 watt amp and used a portable cd player (the walkman type) for the source.

we then put the subs into a plywood box that we had built for his moms car that's ports were just a couple holes the size of a quarter and grabed som bungee(sp?) straps and thew it onto the back of a honda elite. for anyone that don't know what that is, it's a spree but slighty larger and a little quicker.

now this box was big enough that when we tried to put it in the car (z24) we had to both run and kick it to get it to go in. needless to say there was a good deal of weight on the back, and with both of us on there it would pop a wheelie as soon as you tried to move.

well we then took off the front plastic and put any heavy rock or small brick that would fit and be able to put the plastic back on and that helped. we would then ride around the local trailer park and bump stuff like lowrider and tap the front brakes and you'd swear the spree had hydro's, front end bouncin'.

people could hear us from a distance though. [Big Grin]

oh and for a short while we has an eq and then a 6x9 under the seat. that poor little battery, everytime we would let off the gas the music would be gone.

First install very funny, thought it was cool at the time.
14 years old waiting for liscense to drive this pos i had, anyway I had gotten for xmas a sony tape deck and of course I had one of those walkman cd player adapters, well i thought it was cool. but i always wanted more bass, so i was looking around trying to find something to mount one of my house speakers in. I found one of them cookie tins you know the ones that come from germany with hard ass cookies in them, danske or something. Anyway i cut a perfect hole in it on the bottom to fit that little 8inch woofer into then i just wired it up and put a whole in the top of is and put the top back on the tin. Sealed it all up with white bathroom caulk to seal around the sub. [Smile] There you have it a TRUE ghetto setup. Funny part was it gave off alittle bass (not much at all) and added a funky dong sound everytime from the metal. I took the time and did two of those ghetto tin enclosures and was pretty happy at the time. [Roll Eyes]

all of this was installed ina 83 ranger that was orange and said Bad cop no donut on the rear window with tint that had more bubbles than bubble bath............

Funniest install i've ever seen, guy had 2 jensen 12s, 2 road gear 8s, 2 punch hx2 12s, and 4 flea market funky pup look alike 12s. He comes to the shop one day, and says his amp burnt up...so I go outside and he had all this equipment in about a late model station wagon everything firing up in the biggest box i've ever seen.....he cut 8 4'' holes for "ports" and had all of this equipment bridged into his kicker xs100 with 4 gauge power and 16 gauge ground, he grounded his amp with speaker wire to the same ground as the radio....and used the other part of the speaker wire for his remote. he said "a ground is a ground right" so i start looking thinking that maybe he just blew a fuse, he pops the hood and he has speaker wire...both wires running from the battery to a fuse holder..then 4 gauge out of that. Well anyway...his amp was blown, he took it back to the shop he bought it from and sent it off.

The guy came back about a month later and wanted me to listen to it, it was the most awful noise i've ever heard, he had the amp playing full range because he said he wanted his 8s to play midbass. Well he says he wants to be louder and wanted me to build him another box, i told him i bet i could make him louder than that with just the hx2s and the xs100 and he gets pissed and says "no way man, more subs are ALWAYS louder than less you don't know what your talking about" tried to burn out leaving and hit the sign to the shop with the side of his car....never even stopped and went home.

Truly the most ghetto install in my history.

I saw a geo metro, or something like that, spraypainted yellow. One DD 15. Not sure about the amp. The owner took out the lawn chair front seat(yes, a real lawn chair)and replaced it with a stack of metal folding chairs. The judge ok'd it. He actually got 151db. He was not amused by all of the remarks people were making and quickly left.....after getting his trophy.

Well, I'm guilty of being a participant in this one.

When I was about 16 a buddy of mine had a crappy little station wagon I wanna say it was an 87 cavalier, but could be wrong (this was 11 years ago.

Anyway, after staying up late drinking, etc one summer night we decided to put a couple subs in his pimp wagon. Mind you it's about 3 am at this point.

We found a couple 12" subs in his basement, I don't even know what kind they were. So anyway we went straight to work on building the box. No real plan, just a bunch of MDF, screws, and glue. We took some rough measurements and started building the box to go all the way across the back seat, and fire at the hatch. I want to say that we made it like 2 cubic feet per side. We just wanted it to be the biggest ugliest thing we could slap together.

Well at around 5 am we finished the box. It was actually built really well, but of course was way off as far as airspace, and port length go.

So we're in need of carpet for it. Well, at 5am you can't get carpet anywhere so we spent the next couple hours putting the rest of his "system" in. This consisted of the amp to power the subs, and whatever speakers he had laying around.

We finished that up, and there was stil nowhere to get carpet open. Now our second wind is long gone, we're on like 3rd or 4th wind. So we head to the strip mall, and try a fabric store, but they don't have anything decent either. Well the thought of decent went right out the window when we say the FAKE WHITE RABBIT FUR! We bought enough to upholster the whole box, and went back to his house.we covered the box, didn't even cut out for the subs, and put on heavy black grills.

We spent the next couple hours driving around blasting the most obnoxious, 3 year old music we could find *cough*vanila ice*cough*. Leaning all the way back and to the sides the whole time. In hindsight it was completely screwed up, but in our state of sleep deprivation, and hung overness it was hilarious.

The box actually sounded pretty good all things considered, and when he replaced the rest of the system, the white fur box stayed until he sold the car.

Hows this for a professional install:

My sister in laws boyfriend wanted to add some subs to his system.

I told him no problem, and went to go check out what he had...

He had a so-called stereo shop in Granbury, TX install infinty coax's in his truck and add an amp. Heres what the shop did:

1. Lets start at the battery and work our way back. The ran 10ga power wire from the Battery for about 6 in where it was taped to an 8ga power wire (i guess they were short). Then it went through a hole in the firewall that looked like they made the hole with a chisel. They then taped the power/rca/and speaker wires all together and ran them to the amp. ( I think it said Pro Sound on it).

I told them they did a crappy job on the set-up he has right now, but I will fix it and put a couple of tens in for him.

Then I started looking at the amp and noticed that the gains were turned all the way down. (My friend had told me that it played way to soft)

So I turned them about halfway up----Now I see why Alt. noise was abundant. Not only that, but one of the rear speakers wasnt even working.

So, this past weekend I started tearing his system apart and found out why the speaker wasnt working: The didnt even bother to hook it up!

Anyway, Ill post some pics later...

When I was 15, I had no deck, so no music.

I put a tower speaker from my house in the trunk of my 88 sentra.
A 1 1/2' x 1 1/2' x 3 1/2' full range tower speaker, with 1 tweeter, a mid range, and the massive 12" sub (rated at like 100w MAX).
Powering the big tower speaker (this thing took up my whole trunk) was my home reciever.
Signal? Portable MP3 CD player going to the reciever. I then ran an extension cord into the trunk to power the amp.

So I turned it on, everything worked (basically a home setup just thrown in the car, nothing actually attached to the car). With the trunklid up, I could hear the mids and highs, but almost no bass. With the trunk closed ALMOST all the way, that thing strted woofing, but I couldn't turn it up or change the song because my MP3 player was in the trunk. Never could close it all the way because of the extension cord [Razz]

Funny thing is that my neighbor heard it and came down thinking I had sounds [Razz]

Wanted to get this tread up and going again! Went to a local show tonight put on by another shop. They are terrific people.....very friendly and have very loyal customers; the only thing is that there shop is out at the flea market. So we go to this show tonight which was also out at the flea market.

First of all, it started an hour late because they just got their Term-Lab today and didn't know how to work it or install it, so supposedly they were on the phone with Wayne trying to figure out how to set it all up.

Finally, an hour after it was supposed to start, they got the show rolling. There were some really ghetto fabulous rides out there to say the least. Mike "Who?" Jones had his new SS ride out there blowing the hinges off everyone else, etc.

Anyways, it's almost finished and I've already gone through. The last guy comes in. He's in a late 80s/early 90s Buick LeSabre. He gets in the lane and he starts out. The meter doesn't do anything. Doesn't read or anything. He run it again.....still nothing. Finally after his second run, the folks running the term-lab are sitting around scratching their heads figuring out what has gone wrong with the pressure sensor (I'm pretty sure it was working fine.)

So I go over to the guys window and I ask him if he needed any help. He said he'd pretty much take any he could get. I first asked him if he could fold his seat down, which he couldn't. Then I told him, "Well, I know one thing that would help, you might want to get the person out of the back seat." Some woman, his g/f or wife I assume, was laying across the back seat asleep. He woke her up and told her to get out of the car. Then I asked him if I could see his box. He popped his trunk and all I saw was this carpeted box with a little port facing the back seat. (BTW, maybe I'm ignorant, but has anyone else seen a bandpass box without glass?) We turned the box around and got it right up against the trunk lid. I didn't know if it would help or not since I looked at his amp and it looked like an old Punch 100 or something (very small). Anyways, the meter "started working" again and he wound up hitting 125 something.

My brother was there for the whole thing. He could probably tell you more. His car was funny too. He recently bought a CRX for $350. It has no front bumper. It needs some front end allignment work on it, and it was a car worth laughing about.....until he put up a 147 something and beat everyone else there thus far by like 15 db.

Hopefully others got some stories to share after a summer of shows!
