i got one. this was last year when this happened. BTW, i'm not an install guru. since i've never had a system for myself, i dont have any experience in installs even though i could prolly tell you anything you've ever wanted to know about car audio but this even made me laugh.

My friend was complaining about how is system wouldn't work. since i had no idea about a system last year, i didn't mess with it but instead took it to a friend of mine who did. he looked at it for two seconds and says,"wheres your ground?" my friend says "on the spare tire". the dude looking over the install thinks for a second and says "did you say on the spare tire well or on the spare tire itself?" "Spare tire......itself."

needless to say, my friend was very embarassed and still has to live up to it today

The funniest install I've done was with a friends of mine. He has 2 (15') Devastators in a bandpass box rated @100w RMS with a Lanzar 800w Amp. It was the worst thing I've ever heard in my life. I've heard a pair of 8's that could beat his 15's! Serioulsly I think his system wouldnt hit 100db!

The funniest install I have seen had to be in a mid 90's Ford Extended cab pickup (not sure on year, oh-well). Anyway, the guy said he had a 1200 watt amp and 2 Kicker Comp subs, and he couldn't figure out why his system would not hit hard. I went out to this guys truck and almost fell over from lack of oxygen because I was laughing so hard. He had a "1200 Watt" Optimus amp wired by a bright orange extension cord (had both the power and the ground running off this straight to the batter with no in-line fuse or anything). And this is where I lost it. He had taped up the cardboard boxes the subs came in, cut out a hole in them, and mounted the subs in the cardboard boxes. I had never laughed so hard in my entire life.

Ok here's one my roommate bought a h u and some junk ass subs and a big old plywood box from who knows where and an old kenwood amp I had lying around. I asked him if he needed a hand installing all this stuff in his pos honda and he says no I installed a pyramid amp before and a craig tape player and I know how to do it(ok).I came home fr work figuring he'd be still installing it and my ol lady say's hell know he installed it all in about 15 mins, so I say oh ya. He never came home that night obviously scored a hunny from impressing her with his new system lol. Anyway he comes home later that night and says that amp you sold me is a pos it's blown and I said bull lets go see it so wer go to his car and the first thing I see are wires coming outta the back window and into the trunk we open his trunk and the smell lmao (smoke) he never mounted the box or the amp down and was in such a hurry no black tape or fuses either one of his subs had a big ass hole in it from sloshing around the trunk the amps speaker outputs were melted from power grounding out on something. He had to buy all new stuff even his hu was baked it only plays left channel lmfao. Anyway he asked for help on his new system and it sounds good, now he just needs a new car lol.

Ok well these aren't THAT funny but are quite ghetto so i thought i'd share.

One...my friends 95 jimmy,"hey i'm gettin some subs that'll kick your ass!" ok dude so he get's them all in and has his brother the "sweet" electrician install them cause he "knew how" so i go and hear it. 2 Pioneer 12s off a eclipse 300W amp in a sealed box, not TOO bad. but it was the install that made me laugh. first he tells me his brother never did anything under the hood i was like ummmm ok. He hooked the like 20 ga. power wire up to something behind his dash god knows what but it's not sweet. the remote turn on is bigger than his power wire and hes using THE ****tiest RCA's i've ever seen. im like dude look at my wire (show him my stinger 4 gauge and dream RCA's) he's like ehh mine works fine. ahaha so i was like um ok, makes me wanna cry. THe funny part is he said his brother knew a lot about car stereo and has installed a lot. you'd kind of have to see this to appreciate it but yea i hope he never does any electrician work for me.Anyway

Two...2 sony xplod 10's in a totally ****ty leaky ass sealed box in the backseat of a buick wired straight to his sony xlpod 45x4 head unit aaaahahha.

I stepped outside to a customer's car one day to scope out some possibilities, only to notice a 20 piece Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket serving as a 10" enclosure. The guy had an Optimus 10" duct-taped into the bucket. I couldn't hold back the laughs!

Recently saw a car with holes cut in the rear deck of a old cadilac. Any ways the holes where cut for 12s and the guy cut 12 inch holes. The holes where sized by fliping the sub and tracing around it. Now if you are a savoy installer you will know what comes next. he put the sub in and it fell right through. So he cut the second hole the right size and sub fits fine. Still the rear deck is not very sturdy. Remember the first sub it was suspended in the hole with speaker wire and bounced alot when it hit.

Too make a long stroy short it wasn't very loud but it shook the car a lot.

I was at a shop trying to sell some audiobahn aw1251x for 75 bucks to to installers. I had gotten the woofers for like 38 dollars. Then i looked in the trunk someone had installed a cd changer and had taped into the parking lights to get 12 volts. i didnt say anything. but i was laughing at the taped wire around the changer.

this guy had the new street window washer neon lights. Well i was installing an amp then i opened the hood to run the hot to the trunk. I saw the 12 volts he had got from the head lights and he had taped scotch tape to the brakes components next to the engine. He had taped into the head lights and raped the wire around the the female output of the lamps. Then he had the wiring going to the neon window washer and had it jammed in between the hood.

I attend a school on saterday called mobile electronics. Well this guy pulls in with a bronco and he says he wants an alarm installed because he had his 15's stolen because his alarm had stoped working. Well while they were taking out the alarm and puting the new alarm. He had to Black lights, the one that makes white shine. Well he had it running from his stock clock. Well, while the installer took the old alarm out the clock just shorted and smoke came from 4 corners of the car. They poped the hood and took the postive cable out and looked for the short. It was mad crazy. They rewired some of the wires in the hood but the car still started. Altough it smelled like smoke, his new alarm with the remote start was the only thing in the car with any value. He had his whole car taped with 99 cent store electric tape. Just wire it right dawm it. Buy a 10 guage wire to power all fo your stupid accesorries.

This guy i know has a 96 Camaro. Well he had 2 kenwood amps running off a 8 guage. The amps were fused with 50 amps each. 100 amps total. His amplifiers werent getting the power they needed. Plus his **** was hitting hard. He had 2 JBL loud and clears. 2 10 kickers. Well he didnt even had a power distrubtion block and had taped a 12 guage wire from his 8 guage and had it running to his amp. He had 2 fuses in his car. One 6 inches away from his battery plus another in the back. The same fuse size, it had no meaning. Then he had 3 caps and he had 12 guage wire wired around all three of them. taped with white tape.

Im still trying to sell him 2" guage monster cable. MONSTER

I just laugh when people got the swapmeet.
Impulse ****.
My 2" guage monster cable is bigger then 0" guage impusle cable.

I got a good one too. A friend of mine bought a Power Acoustik 1000 watt amp (quiet chuckles when I head that) and two Road Gear 10" subs. I said man I hope you didnt pay much for it all because its junk. He said Yeah I know the subs are junk but the amp is one of the best on the market. I said no it wasnt. it ranked with the flea market brands and he got all pissed off and said he wanted to show me it. So we went and listened to it. He thought it sounded good, bass boost all the way up, gain maxed and bass on the deck maxed. I would say it sounded like a clock radio, but I would be insulting clock radios everywhere. So we go hear my blazer, which has a nice system, metered 133, not bad for sealed and 600w rms and he got all pissed off and said he didnt have enough power. So the next day he told me he "added" 200watts to his system. I was like how the hell do you add 200watts to the amps rating? he said he didnt, and gave me the your moron look. So I asked what he did to get 200 extra watts from the amp. He said he hooked up the rear channels from the head unit in parallel with the power acoustik amp. *rofl* I told him he might want to unhook that before he toasted something and he just laughed. A few days later he was complaining his head unit wasnt working. haha, oh well, some people never learn.

Haha, great posts! Its always fun to top these old posts.
I have seen two wack installs since starting school. One, this dude, has a set of kenwood somthing or other 10's, in some rockford prefabs sittin in his rear seat of his car, some buick looking vehicle. Im thinking aight cool cool. I asked him what he was pushing them with and he pops the trunk, and i see this Alpine v12 tied to the trunk some how. Yeah i said tied. With string, looked like that brown twine you can get at the store. LOL I almost laughed my ass off. Second install. Saw it like tuesday night. This other guy in class has a rockford amp, the old ones, black, plain jane looking. I look under the seat of his truck and the thing looks like it has had bout a gallon of pepsi spilled on it, and then rolled in dirt. Very messy. The thing is wired with like, i swear, 14 gauge wire power and ground. around the same for speaker wire. Almost laughed then. Then i ask what his subs are and he folds the seat forward and i nearly wet myself. Some 12" sub AND a 10" sub in what looked like a home made wedge box. I nearly lost it. He said it sounded good but it was raining out and i didnt feel like listening. His jaw nearly dropped when he found out i only have a pair of tens, because he heard me across the parking lot and that only was at around medium volume.
Another one, my friend wired up this like kenwood truck box, sub and horn tweeter thing, wired it off my old sony head unit i had sold him about a year ago. nearly laughed so hard in his face.

while managing a small Houston Area store, one of the installers took on custom door panels in an older Monte Carlo. he removed the factory panels and for three days he built screw-on pieces for the lower part of the factory door panels.

when the guy came to pick up the car, the installer dropped the panels in, never realizing what he had done wrong, until another installer pointed it out for him.

the panels would only fit one way, he had built them for the wrong side of the doors.
the speaker locations were at the rear bottom corner of each door!!!after he was ridiculed for it by all of us, he convinced the owner of the car, that it was the best place for his speakers for staging reasons!!!

Ok i got one for yall. Ok check my name here, yeah and all yall know redneks do some dumb ****. Well i didnt have enuff money for some subs cuz this dumbass ran into my explorer and all was lost. So i got this 88 Bronco II. Anyways i was gonna hook up this house 10 in a ported box. Well my deck doesnt have outputs (lmao) anyays i got a power inverter and hooked up the stereo reciever, but not only that like 8 bose speakers(u know the little 2's) well it hit pretty hard, recever in the back seat and all.

Ok second parts this is where it gets ghetto. This kid at school was makin fun of my system so i set up for the next day to have a "sound contest" type deal.

Well i went to my buddys house and got his polk double firing 12 house subs. Here is the ghetto part. i know have a house reciever, house equilizer, 8 house speakers sittin all over the place, one house 10, and 2 house 12's

Ok the next day after school i rol up beside his car. he has 2 xlod 15s(****,****,****) and i crank it up, well the inverter i ony rated for 400 watts and it cant get enuff power to constantly power it all. I did out hit him, and i think my hatch rattles worse. but it wa so embarassin havin to turn it all backon every 60 seconds LOL

And by the way i orderd a Kicker L7 and a RF 450 amp [Big Grin]

in my 14+years in car audio i have seen many shade tree installs, but one of the best was a guy that came buy and said he wants more bass! mind you the little car was not that bad sounding? so when he open the trunk there sat two 12" subs in there cardboard boxes with duct tape to seal them! man was i rolling on the ground!

but what about people that have hit big numbers with strange set up's ? anyone?

right now my friend has 8g wire ran out of his door jam to his jensen "300" watt amp, that prolly does like 75, and then wired his subs with 18g primary wire, the ground is to a little screw that holds down a plastic panel. All wiring is visible and the subs are in truck boxes in the back of his jeep, which flop around when he turns. At least he has a good headunity, pioneer deh-p7200

One of the worst installs i've seen was one i did when i first started it was 2 15's in a tube (made out of an above ground pool [Smile] ) I just layed it in my back seat (oh yea one of the 15's was an old lanzar and the other one was a ecstasy lol)
thay were both ran off this radio shack 40 watt booster that was bridged and mounted in the center console with a 92mm computer fan laying on it to ceep it from burrning up.
and i had my 18 awg power wire ran right from the fuse box (i just wound the wire around the fuse and put it back in lol)
It wasnt to bad it was the first thang to brake of my rear view mirror [Razz]
also neather of thesubs had dustcaps well the lanzar had a cd glued on it with some tape covering the hole.

Both of my funniest were - unfortunately - done by me. But at least I can admit and laugh about them.

One was stereo related, the other not, but both are ridiculous, and both were done YEARS ago, well before I knew even the slightest thing about what I was doing:

First, I had a 1988 LeBaron Convertible - the stereo SUKKED - and you couldn't even hear it with the top down. Then the tape player broke, so in goes a bad-ass $30 tape player (hehe). Next I decide to add some cheapo EQ (cuz it looked so cool) - didn't fit in a 1/2 DIN space, but I made it fit - kinda. Looked like ass. Then of course, my buddy says "you need some subs for some bass" so out to the local flea market we go, and I pick up a pre-loaded dual 12" wedge sub box with some kind of crappy woofers in it, and throw it in the well for the soft-top behind the rear seats. Now - remember, I know NOTHING about what I'm doing - I tap into the rear speaker wires, and hook up the subs. Took me about a month to find out why they sounded like such ****. And, I wound up bending the frame of the convertible top because the box was in the way of the mechanism, and the top would never line up right again - took two people to close it after that. Oh, to be young again....

The other was a '79 Olds Cutlass Cruiser wagon I had for work. The switch for the brights - you know, pulling back on the directional stalk - completely mushed out and my headlights would only work about 50% of the time. Replacing that switch is a bitch-and-a-half, so I tapped into the headlight wiring under the hood, and ran a series circuit (like I really knew what that was at the time) direct to the battery, with a switch in the dash. I eventually figured out that if I hooked up a parallel wiring config, that the headlights wouldn't be so dim [Wink] (didn't know what parallel was, only I figured out how to do it from looking at the original wiring). The wires were all over the place, but it worked.
Then, I need work done on the car - something in the starter and the fusible links to the battery. Anyway, I'm looking in the shop window as they are finishing up my car, and smoke starts billowing from the engine, followed by a small fire. They put it out, and then ask me "what the hell are all those wires?" I explain the headlight ghetto rig, and they ask me where I put the fuse for the whole thing. "Fuse? What do you mean?" [Wink] My wires had been wrapped wround the wiper motor (for lack of zip ties), and when they tested the wipers (to check the new repair to the electrical system) the wires hung up, shorted, and almost burned my car to the ground. Needless to say, I put a fuse in there the second time around.

Whew - I'm glad I don't do stuff like that anymore. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go finish duct taping my un-fused 10 gauge power wire to my battery, so I can run it over the top of the car to my new JBL 1200.1, mounted directly to the gas tank with sheetmetal screws. And once I finish gluing the ground cable to my plastic bumper, the Jensen 12" woofers I have laying un-mounted without boxes under my seats free-air are gonna POUND!! [Wink] [Wink] [Wink] [Wink] [Wink] [Wink]

I've seen some getto ways to attatch the power wire from the amp to the battery. I have seen it where they stripped the end of the power wire, and squeezed it between the battery post and battery terminal. I have also seen it where they put a screw through the end of the wire, and into the section between the battery terminal and post. And finally, using a vise-grip wrench to hold the power wire to the battery terminal on the battery.

Also check out the "Coincidences and $30k+ trucks don't mix" thread for a really frustrating problem we had.
