Some guy asked me why his "Bass system" as he called it didn't work. I take a look at it and suprisingly it's a focal sub (how on earth he scored that) connected to a decent MTX amp and at first glance the wiring was all good. The power wire was 8 awg all done perfectly fused and such so I figure it's the ground. The wire went in a hole he drilled in the false floor of the trunk, then through a hole in the fenderwell to a bare wire dragging on the ground.

Saw another one yesterday, kid brought by his blazer, said the amp was working but the louder he turned it up, it seemed to get quieter, i glanced over everything and it seamed ok, i rewired his subs to drop everything to 1 ohm, and things got quieter, then i took a good look, his power ran to the remote, and remote to the power...

A rep at a shop here in Tampa (Audiomax) said that you can / should only use DVC's in a ported box because the voice coils generate a lot of heat and need to have air circulation to keep them cool. Then he continued to tell me that a sealed box should only be used with SVC subs and that they are louder and better than a ported box because (and this is verbatum) "all the sound don't go out the hole..."

ive worked on lots of mexican installs..they bring it to my shop to fix what they screwed up. ive seen a headunit done by mexicans where they ran out of crimp caps so they used bubble gum to..i guess...seal their connection?? im serious guys, bubble gum. and i saw one mexican with 4 different 10s in the same box..the box had a different size and material wood on EVERY SINGLE SIDE!! lol of course he built it..i wonder how the subs were wired up..he had 2 18gauge wires coming out of it and a port on top that was just a hole cut out..and it was like a 7inch diameter hole!! no seal on any crack..he used a hammer and nails and all the nails were only half in..i wish i had taken pics of this

Living overseas (and broke), I had a Cerwin Vega 15 inch sub in a sealed box, a JBL 15 inch sub in a cardboard box, and a Kicker 8 inch in another cardboard box (running of a L.A. Sound two channel amp) in the trunk of my Ford Escort.

a friend of a friend wanted me to check out his system, he thought it was quite good but wanted more punch. Open the trunk at my local shop and everything stops. He'd picked good gear, a pair of polk momos and a pair of crunch z2100s, one bridged per woofer. He used a threewire house extention cord, ran two wires to the battery, and the third one to the remote on the iawa hu. Then each of the two wires from the bat went into an amp with no fuse, and the remote was split and went to each amp. He had like 14 guage wire coming off the ground with a fuse like three inches from the amp and grounded it to a screw in the side of the trunk. I set him up with four guage a rf distro block and moved the ground to a bolt, it now hammers. Just goes to show what a little inginuity can accomplish, it worked like that for three months.

my sisters boyfriend was using the stock alt. from a 2.8 litre s-10 regular cab pickup it was only 35amp he had got another batterie and put it in the floor board on the passenger side had his power wire running through the door jam had two audiobahn subs(i forget which ones) that he got from the flea market with two of those 760watt pioneer amps from walmart he had told me that when he turned it up about half way that everything would shut off but i didnt even bother to ask him if he wanted me to take a look at it cause i tried to help him install it but he kept ignoring what i would tell him and would do it his own way well his alternator went out a few days ago (i told him it would never be able to keep the batteries charged and that he was going to fry that alt but he didnt belive me)and i put another one on for him (it is still only a 65 amp alternator but that is what he bought) so when he was inside doing something or another i rewired a bunch of his stuff and got him running and everything then i left his house to take my fiance to get something to eat and then went home well he was at my house (bringing my sister home) and he came up to me and said "my bass is alot louder and it doesnt cut off when i turn it up now what did you do" so i told him i correctly rewired some of his stuff when he wasnt looking since then he has been asking me all kinds of questions like would this sub be better, and how should i wire this, and could you take a look at this and see if this is right the funny thing is when you would sit in the truck and turn it on it would seem very loud and you cant hardly hear the rest of the music but you could get out and instantly it was quite again and if you started walking you could only hear it for about 20-30 steps then you can hear the rest of the music but you cant hear the bass hardly at all i have been trying to get him to go up to extreme audio and let them install something for him or at least get some better amps but he always says something to the affect of this is great how it is he gets pissed and wont even listen to mine when i change something because he knows you can hear mine over his from thirty feet away while sitting in his truck o well he is only 17 and he will learn to listen to people with more experience one of these days

It was in my 87 Cadillac. Was very broke so I pawned all my goodies Clarion 7675, Rockford 120a2, Memphis Powerbass 12". Replaced with shaft style cassette played sitting in the empty hole in the dash. Powered by a cigarette lighter plug. 12" series one RF, 2 6.5" and 2 horn tweeters just laying on the armrest and the floor. Oh yeah an no enclosure on that series one. My saving grace I did have the antenna plugged in with an adapter, not just a cut down piece of coat hanger. Did wire it right so not to have too high or low of an ohm load. What can I say I was desperate and poor.

The Wireless Amp We had to do a radio in a Cherokee and the guy had one of those walmart boxs with the 6 1/2 and tweeters he said was running off an amp. We couldnt find a power wire, rcas, speaker wires, nothing. We took the radio out and saw a 10ga on the remote, and a 16 or so on the constant. We traced them and they went to the center console where we saw the amp, no rcas, no speaker wires, only a reversed set of power wires. It was so old it had a turn on button on the side and a remote for some reason, Id say crica 1980. I asked him how long it was hooked up like that , he said 2 1/2 years. Thats when the other guy with me had to get under the dash so the guy couldnt see him laughing. I asked him who hooked it up, he said he did. I asked him where the speaker wires were, he said he thought it didnt need any, it was wireless! . Thats when I had to hide my face and the other guy burst into tears and I think he peed a little. I came back up and told him it wasnt hooked up, never was. He said, and I swear, " I guess thats why I never heard a differnce when I turned it on". I think I had a small heart attack and the other guy had a vein burst on his forehead. We finished it up and sent him on his way udderly humiliated and us with this great story to tell to all. Ill see what else yall have to contribute. I get reminded of them sometimes and Ill post them up
" The Box" we sold this guy a sub and an amp one day. He came back the next saying he wanted to return the sub cuz it squeked(sp). Now we all knew this guy didnt have a clue about hooking stuff up but he didnt wanna pay for it so , later. We asked him what box he put the sub in, he said the one that came with it. We all looked at each other cuz we knew we didnt sell him a box! The manager stiffled a laugh and asked him if we could see the box. We all went outside and he popped his trunk for us to see the box the sub came in with a wire hanging out of it going to the amp he bought. Upon a closer look, he had taken the sub out, wired it up, put the styrofoam around it, taped the styrofoam up with duct tape, and ran the wire out with a small hole in the cardboard box! We all about died laughing as he closed the trunk lid and left never to be seen again!

Long time ago, while I was an engineer at a radio station, one of the station's salesmen had a Datsun coupe with a really decent and clean system in it, very basic but nice none the less. Later this salesman guy traded in his Datsun for a later model hatchback kinda car. I believe it was, and he wired his old sound system into the newer car. The scenario seems plausible enough, except for one thing, he had mounted his woofers face-down onto each of the humps for the rear wheelwells, spacing the woffers from the wheelwells with little blocks of 2x4 so the woofers could still breathe somewhat. Everything else still sounded fine but the bass was nothing but 'blonng-blonng-blonng.' The guy was happy with it though I couldn't imagine why.

This was about a 4 months ago when I got all my new equipment and always wanted to shove it into my friends face because he always thought he knew more. So I talked to him and he said that he had a compVR in a bandpass box, and have two mtx subs in a sealed box, and the jlw3 in its own sealed box. He told me that he uses one sub for vibration, one for loudness, and one for distance. I was laughing so hard because I couldn't believe he was trying to feed me BS. And up to this day he always had the same amp. Alpine 5 channel amp. He would always say that his amp had to much power for his subs, because everytime he turned it up, his "subs" would start to distort. Yeah......I wonder why.
