I had this unit installed in the girlfriends 02 focus. when it was installed the mounted the antenna at the pillar. I thought that it should be installed behind the rearview at the top of the windshield. sometimes it works great then other times it's not that great. anyone else have experience with this unit?

It's fine where it is.

Could you give me any other insite as to what might be causing it to have a poor signal strength? 150Ft away and it wouldn't start the car.

pinched antenna wires will cause that. rerun the antenna wire to make sure its good. And then some autostarts are just garbage and have no range. also depends on electrical interference in the air. I've noticed ours don't work at 50 ft downtown, but out in the country, we get 1/2 mile at times.
