I would personally recommend 'Wasp' or 'Hornet' from DEI @ www.directed.com
Bulldog also has some @ www.bulldogsecurity.com & you can find them at some Auto Parts Stores.
They have basic dual-stage shock (warn away & full trigger) with current sensing for door/trunk entry. The disadvantage of these types of alarms is you can't add on (extra sirens, sensors, etc...) The advantage is at least you have protection, which is much better than nothing at all!
Installation is very easy with +/- batt connections and mounting the DIY alarm unit.
BTW, I bought my bro the DEI Wasp over a year ago and it has been working great!

I quit installing self contained alarms years ago.. I got tired of the problems. Also, they will not trigger (doors) if your dome light is not working.

so what do you recommend? I've been reading over the sticky post by sepp about security... I'd like to do a custom alarm system with multiple sirens etc. Should I just buy everything a la cart?

u can just get you a nice paging alarm and purchase a few sirens to go alon with it. Autopage makes a nice 2 way pager, dei, omega etc.... if you have no experience installing one. I would let a professional take care of the install.

Yea I'm going to have it professionally installed for sure. I can install certain things, but I think it's worth the money to have a lifetime warranty on wiring

I know they are not the best, but at least decent.
I installed the self contained DIY Bulldog's for people that own a few cars in the driveway and want cheap budget alarm protection. Out of about 6, 2 crapped out. The main problem is getting good range for the transmitter. If set right, hardly no false alarms.

If you want to do a 'custom' set up, then yes get the whole deal alarm systems.
Speaking of custom alarms with multiple sirens, check this out (if you haven't already):

best bet is to go to a trust worthy shop in your area and purchase the alarm from them along with install. Alot of shops will charge more if you get the alarm from say ebay or the net. plus if something happens u have a warranty. you may think it saves u cash in the long run but it doesnt to buy online

I agree!
No all in one is worth dang.
I did hear a success story over at ROE about a cheap 'all-in-one' doing it's job & the punks ran off without any loot. He watched it as it went down.

It really depends on the thief. Most kid amateurs will run at anything that disturbs them. For the more experienced bold thief, you need a 'custom' alarm set up with multiple sirens, back ups, etc.... to be more effective in getting them running. Even then it might not work, but with a 'custom' alarm & physical security measures at least you have done what you can.

I wouldn't go with an all in one setup. They usually don't offer any room to improve on the system.

While it's true that you can't add on, I would not discourage the use of them for that reason. The point is these alarms still offer protection which (like I mentioned before) is much better than nothing at all.
The way I look at it is this:
If you have invested a lot in show & sound for your ride, I would recommend a full 'custom' alarm set up with upgrades.
If you own a car and it is basically stock (for the most part) and you desire cheaper Do It Yourself alarm protection, then get the DIY self contained alarms. Like I mentioned before, I would recommend the "Wasp" unit from DEI over Bulldog.
The bottom line is this:
If someone can't afford (both $ and installation)the full professional alarms, there is still a way to have simple alarm protection with the use of DIY self contained alarms.
* I support the use of full professional 'custom' alarms over DIY self contained systems. I am also a supporter of alarm protection in general.
