I have a viper 550 ESP alarm/remote start that has been giving me problems since its installation . I was wondering if any of you have any experiance with this model to help me locate the problem . What wrong is this , first its installed in a 93 silverado , 6.5l turbo deisel , same motor thats in a hummer. When i try to remote start , the unit wont remote start both warm and cold engine. Just one or the other . When first installed it would start my engine ONLY when the engine was cold , after the glow plugs heated and the glow plug indicator light in my dash goes out . But it wouldnt start when the motor was warm , which we determined was cause d because the viper was waiting to start after the glow plugs warm . but when the truck was already warm the plugs dont need to preheat , therfore the unit would never start warm . So to rectify this my installer hooked up a relay on my wait to start wire , which makes it ONLY start when warm . The unit now tries to crank the engine while the glow plugs are still heating . Me and my installer are at a loss and he isnt very experianced with this model on deisel engines . Can anyone help ???????

I am sure DEI has a tech support network. He should just call them, and I am sure they will solve the problem.

I have suggested that to him many times , but seem to go in one ear and out the other . Might have to find another installer , the install is most likely the culprit. It takes a bitwriter to program so it makes it even harder.

How about trying your existing setup without the relay and add a tempature sender. You can get these at Summit or Jegs. They use them in cars to turn on and off electric cooling fans. This would be used to show the remote starter that the engine is warm and able to be started. I would think these temp senders show a ground once the target temp is reached. Probably have to change the ground output to +12v, easy to do with a relay. Or even better with a TIP31 power transistor setup - that way the relay wont be active all the time the car is warm. I was inspecting the alarm install the other day and noticed not ONE soldered connection. They used butt connectors to connect the brain. No shrink wrap anywhere , just alot of wireties and electrical tape .. They also used wire taps , which from what i understand is not a good idea .. The relays for the system and the brain are easily accessable without removing any dash panels . Just reach under the dash and yank it out . Also they mounted my valet button or "ghost switch " in plain view right under my cigarette lighter . Sad thing is i payed 500. for this unit including installation and i still have to use my DFS alarm on my head unit .. I wired that myself and it works flawlessly . Thats more than i can say for the viper . I d-loaded the manual for the 550 , 4 hrs. and 75 pages later i have all the wiring diagrams . After looking at the manual , theres no way i could fix it . I wouldnt even try because it will void my warrantee. So guess i need a good installer.. What really makes me laugh is , the installer who wired it up says , bring it in and leave it for a day and we will have it working right . Well after seeing their shade tree install , i doubt my truck would be any better off afterwards..

Please don't blame the viper......I just sad to see a Shop that doesn't car about the image they put out......I do random Checks on my installers work....if i am able to find ANY wiring or Alarm Parts in plain view or by sticking my head under the dash .........They will rip it out and Start over....and then explain to the customer because of their LAzyness they will have to wait longer for their vehical.....

I take Alarm Install's VERY Serious
And so do my installers or they don't work for me

I dont blame the viper .. After looking at the install , im sure thats my problem . A alarm is only as good as the install. The alarm part of the viper works great , just use my DFS alarm to be safe . Never know with the remote start messed up , no telling if the alarm is working properly.. I did call DEI tech awhile back and told them of the problems and they told me they only sell to qualified installers , so my truck must be screwed up . I had my truck checked over by more than one mechanic and even hooked up the diagnostic pc to my ride . Not a single trouble code or problem was found .. The only other authorized DEI retailer is 280miles away ..
