does anyone know how proximity sensors work? I want to install two proximity sensors in my 4Runner cuz the one I have now doesn't really do a good job of covering the back and front. I was worried that the two sensors might interfere with each other or extend too far outside of the car. anyone know the specifics?

From everything I've heard and read, the alpine sounds like the best.
I am now moving this to security conference.

well, I currently have a Viper 550ESP with a 508D proximity sensor made by DEI. if I was to add another one, would the radar fields interfere w/ each other? an installer at circuit city told me that they will screw each other up and cause false alarms. but then again, he said a lot of other stuff that was pretty much just wrong. so I'm just confused now...

Proximity sensors send out a radar signal, sort of like a field of protection, if an object breaks that feild the sensor detect this. I don't think the two would interfere with each other. Although I am sure you would have a problem with false alarms. I would suggest piezo sensors at each door, this will detect the insertion of a car opening tool (ie. slim jim)or a key into the door, and less prone to false alarms.

I've got 2 Code Alarm MV-1 (Micro Vision) sensors in the Turbo T/A. Installed since 1990. Never falses. Works great. Less filling. Highly recommend them. Ed

i have an alpine prox on my 8081 and it works great... plus with the alpine depending on the alarm you can run 2.. you might want to look into that if one sensor wont cover the whole vehicle..
is there an "up" side to the prox sensor? I was thinking of sticking one prox sensor to the underside of the armrest in front, but I'm worried about the sensor only emitting the radar waves downward, if there is an up side.

hmm, well, it's been a while since I installed the two prox sensors. thought u guys might want an update.
well, one prox sensor is up in front just in front of the shifter. the other one is about a foot and a half to two feet behind the rear seats. the front one is calibrated to chirp if someone looks into the car and go off if they reach in. the rear one is turned all the way down.
well, the stupid thing falses a lot sometimes, and sometimes it behaves really well. I get annoyed sometimes and I just end up unplugging the rear one for a day or so. I'm gonna try to adjust them this weekend or something when I go to work on my car. my new deck should be coming in in a day or two. well, I'll keep ya updated!
hmm, just a thought... I added the second prox sensor by splicing into the wires of the first. could this be the cause of the falses?
ace, one prox sensor is enough to cover the interior of an accord. one would probably be enough to cover my car comfortably, but I was able to pick another one up for pretty cheap so I thought, why not? =) cuz of all the false alarms, that's why not. but I didn't know that then =P
