is there such an animal or add on box? it would seem a hell of alot more relaible than a pager setup. but i guess the guy may be long gone either way by the time you reach the car.

Ya know, I remember hearing something about that a year or two ago in a car audio mag. You could turn on/off your alarm with your phone (from anywhere in the world), remote start, and I believe it would call you when the alarm went off. You could do any function the alarm had with your cell phone. However, I do not know if that was "technology in the works" or if there actually is a product out now that will do it. But, yes I have heard it is possible and think it is a wonderful idea, and I don't personally know of any products that allow to do this.

see i was thinking about going with some kind of in car puter setup. i am going to be installing a standalone computer to run my engine soon. it requires a laptop to tune the thing. so after my eclipse was damaged in several attempts to steal it i was like WTF we will just use like a PDA or something to control an in car puter so this way i could tune the standalone listen to mp3s without having to burn cds and later if i wanted add a DVD real cheap blah blah you get the idea..if i were to use a PDA it could leave with me when i left the car. also people are using in dash LCDs with touch screens to control the carputer. usually run winamp or whatever. there are several proggies out there that can use a many standard IR remotes to control computer apps. so there is alot of ways to do this.
anyway all that said i was thinking there has to be something out there that i could use to dial a number if an alarm was triggered. i mean if we had a puter onboard we could use the serial or parallel ports as input/output and maybe there was some software or a blackbox out there that would do the trick? if there isnt i would be suprised. i dont code or program but i think if it came down to writing a simple program to dial a phone i may be able to stumble thru it.
i dunno kind of thinking out loud at this point. we will see in time if no one has any ideas here im sure i can figure something out.
for more carputer stuff check out www.mp3car.com in case i have inspired anyone with this.

thoughts? experiences?
I would be worried that my phone sometimes doesn't have the best service and may not get the call through. Would be cool though.
Sounds like a really good idea, doesn't seem like it would be too hard to do. Of course I don't know how to do it but you know. I know you could probably rig the car some way. Like using the same kind of relay that flashes the lights, horn, etc. to make a mechanical arm to move and push a button on a phone in the car to call your cell phone. Probably have to have some kind of 1 button dialing function.
Sounds kind of crazy, probably not worth the hassle.

well a puter can dial a number at will. just need a modem or some such to actually get the puter to talk to the phone. it shouldnt have to be done mechanically. where there is a will there is a way. part of puting this up here is for people that have the knowledge and or access to stuff to make it work then maybe they can market something like this. sure beats a pager IMO. back in the day when cell phones were more commonly car phones i know there were interfaces that would dial the phone. if you think about it if you can talk to the puter in the car with the phone you can control other things as well. starting, roll up windows, etc etc...all kinds of crazy stuff. its kind of funny there is telemetry out there that many racers use (i mean like road racers etc) that you can tweak you engine puter with a cell phone or so i have heard. i know the standalone unit i am looking at has a telemetry option. the ant. is kind of big for it but the fact that you can do it is cool as hell.
