I am trying to solve the problem of space up front so that I can make a better center console... my major issue so far is that the gear shift is dead smak in the middle of where I want to have the console. Has anyone ever tried to move this to another location? I dont want to move it very far... maybe only 3-4 inches back. The problem is it is riveted to the frame, and that leads me to believe that it is a DNFW (do not fu(k with). I tend to go with the point of view that anything with a bolt is fair game, but this seems to be put in place to stay. I wonder if it is a case of extending a cable or if it is a little more complicated than that.

I admit that I am not a mechanic... I am far better at electronics than mechanics. If any of you have any suggestions, please let me know.

P.S. The car is a 98 Mercury Mystique (automatic)

Just check your cable length and how it is attached to the shifter and chassis. I have dealt with this on aftermarket shifters (I work on race cars and most use some type of cable ratchet shifter), and you can usually place them wherever you wish as long as you don't kink the cable. Drill out the rivets, move the shifter back, and try it without making any permanent changes to your console. If it seems ok, drill new holes and mount it securely. If not, put screws in the original holes to put the shifter back to stock.
