What are you guys using for sound dampening? Is there a cost effective way to get silence without spending a ton of money?

I need to do the doors and verticals in my truck.

I saw some cheap "extreme liner" on Ebay that looks like a candidate. Anybody use this stuff?

I've got some raammat that I want to install, mainly on the doors, trunk and roof. Is this going to be a problem? I live in Las Vegas...obviously I will replace my headliner after I install the raammat, but is it likely to come unstuck?

I was thinking about using Cascade VB-1 liquid/paste, on the floor, firewall, and I have some VB-1S spray in cans that I was going to use on the outer door skins...any problems with this? Have you guys had good/bad results with liquid dampening products? I'm just looking for a cheaper solution so I can put several layers of raammat on my doors and elsewhere where it is probably needed more...and I've been thinking about getting some carpet underlay for under my carpet, thoughts?

The thing to consider is what kind of Damping you what to adcheve. 1) outside noise 2) sheet metal rattling.

If is sheet metal Dyomat will not help. You need expanding foam. The minuim (sp) amout of expansion stull will work. Just get in where the metal is unsupported. and tht will do the trick.

I have a 76 GP and I have no noise from my 12" sub from the outside of car.

Well, I want to damp everything: outside noise and inside vibrations. I guess a combination of paste/liquids, and mat-type stuff is the best idea.

man i just wrote a huge response and i deleted it on accident . owell . ha . basically what i said was that for the money raammat was the best stuff ive used by far . what i didnt like out of all the deadening ive used was the cascade spray , its cracking like paint chips from my bass , and dynamat orginal . it cost way too much for its value and it tends to peel off very easily . the carpet underlayment is a good idea , but most cars allready have it , unless you wanted to add another layer . one thing i would look at is acoustic foam . ive found it for pretty cheap on a site i found a while ago . the shipping is kind of exspensive , but the overall price is pretty good for what you get . here's the site www.foambymail.com/volaraSP.html .

For dampening........I'd use water

For DAMPING, I'd use one of the other products suggested.........I like Brown Bread myself, although it is hard to chew..........ok, I'm done

Whats the deal with expandable foam? I heard it was a mess. The tailgate of my explorer rattles and idealy i would like to make it solid but one of my freinds tried it and his locks and tailgte wouldnt open. Theres really no way to get in there to mask stuff off to keep it from binding up. Any ideas? Where is sould expandable foam be used? Thanks!

yep be careful with expanding foam, that stuff is messy as hell. i used it on the tailgate of my caravan and it works great but i don't think it was worth the mess. i also had made my gate latch not work so i had to take a knife and cut out around the latch and it now works again but that wasn't fun. Hell if i didn't need to use the tailgate i would have left it that way. good theft deterent

Household fibreglass insulation works well as long as the area never gets moist. I had my rear fenders and much of the trunk of my first car stuffed with it. You can also sandwich it between a sheet of carpeted (or vinyled) 1/4" plywood and screw it on. It works very well.......oh and the expanding foam, I had a similar experience to what sir stickybuds went through. I filled my trunk lid with it and was unable to open the trunk. I had to drill out the lock and replace it. On the upside, I found one with a power trunk release.

Expanding foam... lots of it. Everywhere there's holes and rubberized rock guard. The black tarry stuff that goes on rocker panels. Just spray on top of the foam... it looks much better and stops even more rattles, It also dries almost rock solid so it adds a degree of rigidness. Not really an dampner now that i think of it but it sure helped make my systeme sound better.

Polymeric Mastic is thickest and cheapest dampener.
