I have two gaping holes behind the seats where I want to mount 5X7 speakers. The holes are bigger than the speakers and behind the holes is the metal truck body. What's the best way to mount these crappy speakers to sound OK without spending too much money? Should they be mounted in a sealed enclosure? Any tips from the experts?? Thanks!

I'm a little confused right now. What year model Ranger is it? Can you buy bigger speakers (i.e. 6x9's) and have them fit in the holes? Can you post pictures of exactly what you're talking about?

For right now what I am seeing is you building a mounting plate that would cover up the hole and then cut a hole in the mounting plate to fit the 5x7. Hopefully you will have enough mounting depth for the speaker to fit without hitting the truck body. You want to use 3/4" material and make it solid.

Welcome to the board.

I have a similar vehicle, 96 Mazda extended cab. I am pretty sure that all Ranger/B-series trucks typically have 6"x8" speakers, both front and back.

I would probably suggest that you use a wood or heavy plastic plate with a speaker cutout or a commercially available speaker adapter.

Thanks for the help; I tried 6x9s in the back but the space isn't deep enough. 5x7s fit and are enough speaker for my needs. I have them mounted now with 3 screws holding the edges of the speakers onto the opening with lots of space around and i think that's compromising the sound quality (I just keep telling myself it's not the speakers.) The speakers in the front are factory <blush> and are really drowning out the back ones. I was planning on replacing the factory speakers with another pair like the ones in the back but I'm trying to make sure they will sound ok when mounted properly. They're Eclipse 2-ways. I took a gamble and deviated from my favorites, 3-way Sonys and I'm thinking I might've made a bad choice. Anyway, I'm too busy w/ school now to work on it anytime soon. On that note, better study. Thanks again.

You can put 5x7 or 6x8 there, both will work..
It sounds like you dont have the mounting plates that the speakers mount to. The rear speakers screw onto a slightly curved plastic grill on each side and those screw into the truck panel next.. That is the factory mounting for those for about a 93-94ish ranger to present.
