In the install I'm doing in my Tahoe, part of it is going to be redoing the overhead
console. Instead of just the typical just between the front seats thing, I'm wanting it to
go all the way to the back where just behind the rear passengers it will widen and run
down the sides. In the large widened area, I'm wanting to put all the power accessories
like distribution blocks, etc under plexi or similar material and have some sort of
lighting from inside to display it.

Thats what I want to do, what I don't know yet is how exactly to go about doing it. I
was thinking a combination of MDF and fiberglass would work, but it wont be holding
up any subs or amps, so I dont think 3/4" MDF is quite called for. Is there a lighter,
yet still somewhat sturdy material that will work well when combined with fiberglass?
Also, what are some ideas for lighting? Those small neon tubes might be too bright
and might look somewhat tacky considering the gap between them because of the big
ends.

TIA

I know some hardware stores sell thinner stuff, like 5/8" and somtimes 1/4". If the don't sell it, you can try just buying some regular ply wood, I know that comes in at least 1/4" sheets.

yup, 1/4" mdf as your base, would work perfect, make sure though when attaching your new panel to the roof, you dont use to lond=g of screws. screw into the roof support. i would build up your "box" and attach that to the roof, then use your headliner and build it up with fiberglass were you need it. and use the modified headliner as your finish trim panel.as for the neons, mount them in about an inch from the opening and use slightly longer tubes than the opening or use 2 long tubes and use short tubes between the diffeent sections you make. that way under the plexi it will give you a nice "halo" effect around all your components.

well enough babling, but that is what i would do. good uck with the project.
