Hey, I thought it would be cool to have a custom light indicator that would light up when, lets say, a subwoofer is pounding.
However, I'm not so sure of the safest way to do this. If I hook up the light (whatever it may be) to the + and - speaker terminals on the amplifier, wouldn't that be way too much power than needed? But then again, how else is one able to make something go on only when the sound is going through.
Please contribute ideas to this if you have any.
Thanks

I'm guessing that you might have a switch for your amp...othewise the speakers would always get sound...put a led after said switch on the remote line, and use a resistor

i had a line of led's like a 3rd brake light hooked up as a "bass light" that goes on and off with the subs, i just put the pos+ to my sub pos+ and neg of the light to the sub neg.. it only turns on when the subs hit cause the amp filters everything but about 65hz and below..it's pretty cool too when the sub hits real low the light is dim and kinda flickery and when it hits loud high bass it's very bright and looks like a red strobe in the car..i had this hooked up for about a month now and no led's have burned out.. [Cool]

What you need is a VU meter and you can assemble one for less than $5. You will build this around the LM3915 IC (segment driver) using 10 LEDs (minimum, you can add more)

A VU meter will have 10 LEDs in line that "pumps up" when you turn up the volume knob. This is VERY easy to build.. in fact I will post the complete schematic in the "General" section when I get home tonight.

did you use any resistors or anything in the + lines from the subs?

how many did you have hooked up? i'm sorta looking to do the same thin

blue ones from my 4 channel (for treble)
and red ones from my sub amp (for bass)
