...first system in my 2001 4runner. I'm trying to do as much as I can so I hope these aren't stupid questions as I've tried to search the archives and couldn't find answers for these. First my system is a Clarion HXD10 HU w/ JL Audio VR650-CSi in the front doors. I've also got an MTX 6304 amp that I'm planning on running everything. I'm wanting to either use one JL W0 10" or possibly two 10" in a sealed box in the rear firing at the back door. I'm looking for an SQ-type system w/ a pretty balanced, tight bass. Would I have too much bass w/ the two subs? My next question is regarding the front door speakers...I've got the factory components that I'm going to replace w/ the JL's, but I can't figure out where the factory x/o's are. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great. I'm hoping to use as much of the factory wiring as possible. Also, I can build my own box for the subs, I just can't find any articles anywhere on how to apply the carpet. I want them to look nice, not like a rookie built them. Thanks for all the help...I love the site and am hoping I can give something back as I'm a lifelong musician and a studio owner, so I'm pretty knowledgeable on acoustics and sound theory. I know that a lot of room acoustics don't apply to cars so it's a bit hard for me to think straight. Thanks again, Mike

no, two subs won't be too much bass...if you want it quieter for regular listening you can turn the gain down on em (if the amp has a remote gain) or turn the bass down on the head unit a bit.
i am not familiar with the newer stock systems but are you sure that it has xovers on the factory speakers?
and as for carpeting a box...got me lol. If it's just for competition i've spray painted before (ugly hehe) but since i build walls it's just a matter of slapping a piece of carpet on the front of it and gluing it, then cutting out the holes. about all i can say is work slowly (get someone to help if possible) and glue a little at a time (alot of people use spray adhesive...get the strong kind that is pretty element-resistant, $~10/can) and adhere a little bit at a time smoothing it out as you go.
wish i had a website to give ya

I learned a lot from the termPro web page, as well as www.sounddomain.com. Here's another page with LOTS of information as well, including a section on carpeting a box:

Wow, older than me...I'm glad I'm not the only one out there. I'm learning a ton from these sites as well. It's hard going into the shops and speaking with a 17 yr old about what I want my system to be. I just don't think they understand...or care. I'm not knocking all shops, but there is so much information/misinformation out there it's hard to sift through it all. Thanks for the URL for the carpeting site. I've got my dimensions all drawn up and am about ready to start building it. I had a cool idea though....since I'm also a guitarist, I thought that it might be neat to wrap the box in the tweed like the old Fender amps. Do you know what I'm talking about? Or, what about a really wild tolex like an older guitar amp. All of these wraps can be bought at the Antique electronic supply shop. I think their URL is www.tubesandmore.com Anyway, thanks again for the help. later, m

Good to have you "hear" on termpro. I always like to see people who are truly interested in audio on the board. I turn 18 in August, but I guarantee I can help you with ideas and other bits of info for keeping your system tuned well. Your right, most shops are terrible. The good ones have guys working in them for the last 20 years in the audio business.
As far as blending with your frontstage, two 10's or one 12 would be great. As far as sq goes, you cant really beat CDT's for the price. JL would give you a little more beat, and powerhandling. When i have applied carpeting ive always used spray on adhesive, and it has worked fine.
Oh yeah... have fun. -Justin

HA!!!! I got you all beat(Age,That is)! I,m 54 yrs. old.,An just like the whole aspect about the install, the Detailing of the fabrication and how it blends in with the car, then the Sound.I did the power and ground,my own power supply for the radio,eq,etc.damping from top to bottom.Layers and layers of Dynamat.Re-loomed as much factory Ford loom as possible,(Their loom was real "cheesy".,I was glad to see that alot of other members use "Welding Cable"too for their power and ground hookups!!I,m finally glad that after 13 years of this 1989-Mustang-GT sitting in the garage!!! I bought this car new when I was 41 yrs old!!!,That it,s FINALLY going to have the system installed! But!!!! What I,m saying is ,you,re not that old to do some of the things yourself.I think when you stand back and look at the finished product,You feel great! Also you saved money by making your own box!!Good for you!I,m a newbie here, but!!!,I like to read how the members help out other people with various problems.I personally think that there are alot of talented, knowledgable, and"gifted"people on this forum, that they can give you advice,or hook you up to someone who can!I,m happy to have become a member! All the best with your install.YOU CAN DO IT!! look at all the old boomers comin out of the woodwork, you can tell summer is here! one thing you will like about this forum is almost every product has been tried by the members. someone will always have the advice you are looking for, and responses are normally quick. the best thing about termpro is you got us idiots testing products to their extreme capabilities, like woofers into wall sockets and such, so you will know what to do and dont do to products! welcome to termpro. shane
